New to Golf...How much to spend?

Hello Everyone. I am new to golf and this forum. I have a very inexpensive set of clubs I got from a guy for almost nothing. I think that's about what they are worth too.

I have read a couple forum and reviews online. I am having a hard time making a choice on what to get. Some people swear by Adams or Callaway SGI clubs for new golfers, but they seem to be a bit pricey. Some people suggest using Gigagolf clubs...however there isn't that big of a price difference. Some people say that getting used clubs off of ebay is the way to go. The problem is I am too new to golf to really know what to buy.

All I really know about the game is that I am bad at it right now, but I know I enjoy it and want to get better. I would love some suggestions on what clubs to buy or maybe what worked for you when you first started. Thanks a lot in advance.

On this forum, the only way to be a real golfer is to have the most expensive clubs on the market. You may be only able to score 130 but by god you have nice sticks....

Seriously though, you don't have to spend a lot of money. Almost any club from a reputable brand, even reputable component clubs, will serve you well. It's important to get measurements though, and get clubs appropriate for your size. After all you wouldn't buy shoes too small or too large...

It would be a little bit silly for me to have an expensive bag of clubs the way I play. Yea, I am sure getting fitted is a good idea. Gigagolf had an online fitting it had me do, seems I was standard for everything. Is GigaGolf and Pinemeadow considered a reputable brand? I saw a site recommend this set:

I was able to put a set together from gigagolf that was pretty close to the same price as the Adams set.

What about used? What should I look at there.

I play GigaGolf clubs, so I can vouch that they are very reputable and high quality. But if you're really standard length and lie then it's open season and you should get whatever you want. Adams are great clubs too....If you can hit the Adams and see if you like them.

So you would stay away from Pinemeadow? Maybe I will head to the local golf shop and see what they say. I just always feel like a place like that is trying to up sell what they have in stock and not giving me the real information.

No Pinemeadow is a really good Component maker too. Both they and GigaGolf are as legit as Component makers can get...

Yea, I am kinda starting to figure this out.

It's a very expensive hobby, but it doesn't have to be too expensive. I've bought everything in my bag at various times since March when I started. I figured it up today on another forum, and through bargain hunting, gift certificates, and other trade ins my total equipment cost was right around $500 for everything in and including my bag...

best way to go for a new golfer is to go used. u're bound to eventually want to "trade up". imho, NEW SGI clubs are a waste of money if u plan on getting serious about golf. save your money and invest in some lessons or some more playing time...

Dude, do yourself a favour and go buy some decent used golf clubs from a store or from ebay - there's no shame in buying second hand clubs. Once you've buried your new clubs in the ground a few times, they are used also.

You'll get decent clubs, and will probably save yourself some time and cost in the longrun.

I have no idea what to look for in used clubs. I have looked on ebay and I am really not sure what to pick. Maybe I will head to the local shop and see what they have tomorrow.

anything game improvement manufactured in the past 5-10 years from a major maker should be suffice. check out your local golf stores. there are always good deals around if you look. the only thing u should have to really decide is stiff or regular...

great advice. just go to your local golfsmith or golf galaxy and took to me the sales rep there they will be able to help steer you in the right direction. say you want some decent used clubs.

      I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.

      Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.

      No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.

      StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry

      So, Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech transfer QB, was found guilty of sports betting by the NCAA. He admitted to it. He placed thousands of bets over multiple years while at Indiana and Cincinnati. This included betting on his own teams.  The NCAA rules ban athletes from betting on any sport (college or pro).  A retired visiting judge from Tarrant County, Texas has put an injunction on the NCAA ruling. He is a visiting judge because the first judge was a graduate and big fan of Texas Tech, and he recused himself. The judged ruled the following... "Under Curry's order, Sorsby is permitted to play for Texas Tech's 2026 season on the condition that he continues his treatment for a gambling and anxiety disorder and serves a two-game suspension (missing games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State)."  Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly care for the NCAA. That still doesn't mean that a college can choose when or where to say, "Yea we agree to these rules for all our sports, well except in this case." Here is a breakdown from S&W. Regula On June 8, 2026, Lubbock County District Court Judge Ken Curry issued a temporary injunction in Brendan Sorsby v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, Cause No. DC-2026-CV-0791 (99th Judicial District... The main judgement made sense. Sorsby, I am going to have all this harm done to me if I don't get to play. The Judge, I agree. The penalty for gambling is too harsh, so here are all these things you must do, and I will grant this injunction against the NCAA. Basically, an analogy would be when a person goes into court for a DUI and they agree to all these other things to not end up in jail.  What sucks for the NCAA is the NCAA has appealed to Texas’ Seventh Court of Appeals, based in Amarillo. All four justices that preside over the court are graduates of Texas Tech University School of Law. It would be hilarious if all four of them had to recuse themselves 🤣. For those who like to read legal rulings...
