So I went with a friend to the pro shop today and I tried out the Adams A7 set.

http://www.adamsgolf.com/products/irons/a7_set.php

I really liked it and it's on sale for $450.

Then I would need to get Fairway Woods, Driver, Putter and a Bag.

The Used selection was pretty weak other than drivers. They had a 2009 Nike SQ Dynamo STR8-FIT 10.5 for $150 and a Taylor Made Tour Burner for $120. Only used Irons they had were Cleveland TA7's.

Your getting up there. Are you getting anything custom? Why not start looking online for deals?

What do you mean by custom? I am getting fitted tomorrow. I assume whatever I get will be custom fitted right? Isn't that what a fitting is? That brings up another question how do I get properly fitted when my swing is a train wreck and I don't even know how to swing properly yet.

Yeah thats what I meant.

Might be a good idea to pick up a complete starter set...play a few months....and revisit the idea of getting something more custom? You'll know if you really like the game, you'll pick up a swing, etc.

Buy clubs that you feel comfortable with and fit your game. Really no one can tell you how much to spend other than yourself.

I don't have a game yet. hehe So I think the beginner set is the way to go until I figure it out.

I ended up getting the Top Flite XL clubs. I got my fitting today. Everything was standard other than when he tested my loft i was hitting on the inside of the club a bit. He is going to have me use it this weekend and we will do it again once I get used to the clubs.

He actually gave me a quick lesson as we were doing the test. After he showed me a few things...it all kind of clicked. I went to the range with some buddies from work and gave them a try. The combination of the new clubs and learning how to swing a bit made a HUGE improvement. It was night and day.

I can't wait to keep working at this sport and getting better. My first lesson is at 5:30 on Wednesday. I am playing 18 tomorrow and I can't wait...the addiction has begun.

Thanks a lot of all the advice and information guys. I look forward to posting here more.

Congrats on getting started. I think you did the right thing by just pulling the trigger and playing rather than spending too long trying to decide on clubs. As your swing changes your fit could also change. Once that is grooved (however long that takes) you might want to get re-fit and at that point get some new clubs.

In the blue Colts bag:

Driver - FT-5 10°
Hybrids - 4DX 15.5°, 20°
Irons/Wedges - CI-7 4-GW, SW | "Free" Warrior 60° LWPutter - TiffanyBalls - various

Yea I am happy with my clubs. They are not the best thing on the course, but all my friends who have better sets tried them and really liked them. I can deal with them just fine for now. My first lesson is tomorrow after work. I hope to get at least 18 in this weekend if not more.

I'm sure someone already mentioned this, but buy used. You don't have to spend a lot on your first set of sticks. A used set of Mizuno's MX line would probably be good. Then, spend the cash you have left over on some lessons.

edit***

I guess you already bought some. Good deal, welcome to the club! I saw your getting lessons too. Very smart move!
