Playing "old school golf" tomorrow.

My friend has a old set of sam snead clubs from the 60's.
We're going to play a round tomorrow using them.

The set is 2 wood 4 wood 3i 7i 6i 8i 9i SW and a modern putter.

And ideas what we'll shoot?

And will the wooden clubs get damaged if we use modern golf balls?

That should be, interesting. I can't imagine the clubs would be damaged by a golf ball..

Difference? I will guess probably 12-16 strokes higher. Hope I'm wrong.

I found an old VIP 1-iron from the 1960's or early 70's in the 'homeless club' bin at my college course. I put a new grip and stiff shaft in it and used it to hit balls off the range until I could consistently strike the ball on the center of the face - that summer my handicap went down to a +1.5 (that was before I wrecked my left wrist being drunk and stupid).

I would guess only a 5 or 6 stroke difference. I would think the woods and long irons should be the only things that cost you. Have fun though, sounds like a blast.

I hit modern balls with my old persimmon and blades all the time, no problem. And your scores will reflect your ballstriking ability. A scratch golfer would probably lose only a few strokes, while a 10 handicap would likely lose more.

All right! Having done that I think it will really give you an appreciation for how good the pro's back then were. Also todays cheapist balls are better than the blata balls from that era which makes a huge difference.

The newer balls are harder and can break the plastic inserts after repeated hits with a healthy club head speed. I doubt that will be an issue for just one round.

Thanks, I was worried about damaging the woods.

The main problem is going to be the grips, they'll be super slick.

I got to get my grandpa's McGregor irons regripped... Then i can go play with something ungodly non-forgiving. I doubt it would hurt the golf ball, i don't think the mass of them changed that much

Today's Golfer, a british golf magazine, did a test on modern wilson clubs vs some 1960s wilson clubs, and the difference was just 2 strokes for 18 holes. (The testers were scratch players)

I played 5 holes today (it started raining)

I the 2 wood was great off the tee and off the fairway, and I don't see what the problem is with blades. Sure shots were a little less accurate but the only problem was the putter which has no alignment aid. I went double bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey. I three putted twice. I'll play 18 tomorrow, make a blog and post some pics of the clubs.

You can take some fine sandpaper to the grips. Play safe (wooden woods enhance sidespin) and don't be afraid to practice hit some chips and pitches around the green with the mid and short irons. "Touch" around the greens, is one advantage old blades tend to have over newer irons.

I noticed that shots seem to go more to the right than my other clubs (lack off offset?)

The woods are really nice though, I prefer them to my normal 3W and 5W I can't mess with the grips since they're not my clubs, they're not that bad though.

I payed in Taiwan several years ago with a business colleague and we both had to borrow clubs at the course.

The 'loaner' clubs were all Hogan Apex blades from about 1978 and some old persimmon woods (with a 5-wood that seemed to have a head slightly smaller than a golf ball).

After about a hole and a half to get adjusted, these were just fine, and we both ended up shooting about what we normally did (we were both probably 12 handicappers at the time).

Might be offset related. Don't forget that on some blades the COG is a lot closer to the hosel (risky, I know) and it's easy for the face to open up during impact if the ball hits out toward the toe.
