and if you have bentgrass greens, the grain is not really a factor. They are cut so short and are such a "soft" grass that they don't effect putts that much.

Really its just experience. I usually can just glance and get a good idea of were i want to start the putt at. If its a long putt i will read it in parts. If its a big breaker i will go out horizontally to find were i think the ball will go straight to the hole then work my way to a point were i think the ball will curve to that line. Its just takes some experience to get use to and a little imagination.

With the bermuda greens that I have played I try to find west as the grain typically goes with the setting sun and then double check it with the cup by seeing the grain side versus the cleaner side and adjust from there. Also if you go late in the afternoon you can pick up the nuances easier when the grain has grown out from the morning cut and it is more evident.

Thanks for the tips guys. I always seem to get burned by an against the grain putt that I did not recognize.
