Im going to be a senior in high school next year, and i really want to play golf in college. but in the actual golf seasons i never do as well as i usually do because its right at the beginning of the year. So far in my two years of playing high school golf ive won 2 meets and been runner up a couple of times with one top 10 finish in a tournament.

but i havent gotten a single letter from any college about anything golf related, idk if i just need to golf better to be recognized or maybe they look at your gpa also, cuz that is low (2.9)

so is the only way to get recognized by colleges is from only golfing for high school?

no the best way is to play in summer tournaments. they mean a lot more then H.S. matches.

are you a 12 handicap? if so you could look into playing for a D-3 school or JUCO. They are still a lot of fun...just shoot the coach an e-mail and I'm sure he'll be interested in considering you for a spot.

First you want to see what schools you might want to go to academic-wise. It's much easier to contact that coach than for them to pick you out and contact you. Also, you are going to want to play in some of these tournaments. Then you want to check out the search function on the site, and you would see that we just had one of these threads yesterday: http://thesandtrap.com/forum/threads...ollegiate-Golf

Playing in summer tournaments is good idea but you will have to put up good scores to get attention. I would say most juco, D3 and some D2 just field a team off of walk ons. I would say send out emails and try to get some feed back from coaches but be realistic i.e. you probably wouldn't hear back from any major D1 programs. The D2 school I played at the coach basically looked around at local high schools and at local tournaments to find kids. He did get a couple kids from out of state but mainly everyone on the team grew up with in a 100 miles of the school.

With a 12 handicap he won't get a call back from virtually any D-1 school. So, like clubchamp said check out JUCO's, D3 and some D2's...you could find a spot on the team there and have a lot of fun.

You get recognised if you do something impressive.
Clearly, that is yet to happen.
Seriously, why would you be expecting something golf related to arrive from a college of any description?
You say your handicap is 12 and you play poorly during the golf season?
What am I missing here?
There is no shortage of people who play golf. I am sure that colleges are looking to give scholarships to players who are playing well. They don't just fire of letters to anybody who might have played golf. I think their aim is a little more specific than that.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

My advice would be to get that handicap down to under a 5, play in as many tournaments as you can, and make those calls. I know that the juco here was highly competitive and produced the likes of Jesper Parnevik. If your goal is to get a ride of some sort you need to get the GPA up, the handicap down, and show everyone that you are willing to work hard.

Sounds like you have alot of work to do in the next year. I go to UNCC (University of North Carolina at Charlotte) and in 2007 we had the #1 D1 golf school in the country and I know alot of them personally (they lived next to my girlfriend). Anyways, what I'm getting at, is these kids were DOMINANT at the High School level along with summer league tournaments. First what I would suggest is getting your GPA up. Next, go online and look up the schools that you are interested in and find their golf team rosters. With this information usually any big school will have player bio's that tell about each players accomplishments. This can give you an idea of what you need to accomplish. Here's my school's roster / bio section.

Good luck, and get those grades up!

Are u a girl or a guy? Is 2.9 your GPA or your Index? Hopefully your index...if it's your GPA, I say study more and play less golf. If your index is a legit 2.9 you probably can make a D2 team but I doubt you'll get any money, maybe a workstudy deal in the cafeteria.

Here, if u want to get into FSU or FL you better have at least 3.5 and 1270 SAT's. Top schools are very competitive both scholasticly and sports. A 2.9 index would make my kids high school golf team but not a D1.

if your a 12 handicap it will be hard to make any team however your best years are most likely ahead of you in golf so look at the positive rather than the negative...

You can go to a nearby comm. college or a D2 or D3 school and try and make the team.

For hockey I had a few letters before I picked my school however I also emailed some coaches and athletic directors. Most coaches are busy coaching and dont have time to check out every game or in this case meets. Dont feel embarrassed or pushy, coaches like iniative and sending out an email is a good way to start. Few tips...

1) Dont post the negatives...
EX: Instead of saying, the golf season is at a bad time and I dont play my best but still win some meets say ... In the past I have not prepared the best but have learned from my lessons and am coming into this season more prepared, here are my stats to this point what do I need to do to be considered for a spot on your team.... The former of the responses sounds a lot like a big excuse where the second is what most coaches will like to hear.

2) Dont go over the top. I simple email is fine with contact information, no reason to send him a video or biography of your life. Short and sweet as the attention span may vary with coaches. Have a parent read it over to look for mistakes

3) Offer within the email a referral to an instructor, playing partner or your current coach

4) If you dont hear back within a months span check back, dont do it too soon but checking back in once is okay... just dont do it too quick or everyday.

If your handicap is 12 and your gpa is 2.9 your aren't going to make any D1 school's team without a lot of hard work in both areas. With your handicap you will need to get accepted into the schools first, and with your gpa that is much less likely.

I played 2 years of D1 golf in college, so I wont be as caustic as some, but yeah, you've got a little work to do good friend. First, the GPA probably wont come up that much as you're a senior.....so focus on your test scores (ACT &/or SAT). Choose a school more geared towards your major. Second, if you decide to send out letters to coaches, consider sending a video of your swing, a coach may like what he sees and try to take you on as a project. Lastly, test the waters and try playing in a couple local tournaments this summer.

In the summer (like right now) when im golfing and im at my home course, my handicap is about 4-6 through 18 holes. my course is just a 9 hole and is very short and easy (other than the terrible fairways)

like yesterday i went and shot 1 over through 9 holes. i dont get to play other courses that often because i just dont have the money to be forking out 30 dollars everytime i play. i think that is what kills me, im not so great at other courses because i dont get out very often. Yeah about 1/4 of the time i will have a good round and a different course where i will shoot about 6 over but usually its around 10 to 12 over. if i played 3-4 different courses throughout the week i bet by the end of the summer i could have my hcp cut in half, but i just dont have the money

You guys don't have junior rates around there? A lot of the nicer courses around here don't even charge a dub if you're still in high school.
