At what HDCP level, did you enjoy golf the most?

I'm the OP and the reason why I asked this is in my case low HDCP is not necessarily fun.

I was having lots of fun while breaking 90. Because par was rare, saving par was fun.

My HDCP dropped to single digit at one point not because of long game but because of short game. I felt like I needed to save par on every hole. Got frustrated, if I couldn't get up and down. I felt I hit the wall and knew that my single digit HDCP was not sustainable. That's when I stopped playing golf for about 3 years, which also coincides with the birth of my first child.

2 years ago, I moved to S. Florida and I started playing again. New courses with new attitude. Specifically, I am trying to build a sound long game. Completely changed the swing and still trying new things to improve. My long game has never been better. For example, at the tee box, I have a good expectation on what the ball will do. Even though my short game sucks right now and at 11 HDCP, I am having more fun than when I was an 8. I'm confident that I will get to a single digit HDCP with a sound basis that can be sustainable.

In high school when I was playing literally every day. Practicing, playing tournaments, fun money games with friends on the golf team, something different every day. I never kept an official hcp back then but it was better than it is now. Nowadays it's more of a struggle to get the scores I know I can get because I can't get out every single day. Still heaps of fun no matter what I shoot, but more frustration sprinkled in because I know what I'm capable of.

Back when I was a +. I played very relaxed and just enjoyed the game. When I hit a bad shot I didn't worry about because I knew that I'd make up for it by knocking down a pin or sinking a putt. When I stood over the ball, I had complete confidence in whatever shot I was planning on hitting. Confidence breeds low scores and when you put up small numbers and hit good shots, golf is one heck of a lot of fun. Don't get me wrong, I'm having a lot of fun right now as well. I do get frustrated from time to time though. Knowing that the shots are there and not being able to pull them off can wear on a guy. It's coming around though...

I've always had fun playing. I wouldn't have stayed with it for 35 years otherwise.

I've been in the 10 - 13 range for most of the last 21 years, and I've enjoyed the run. I don't work that hard on my game, just play golf and do some occasional short game practice. I maintain my handicap mostly just by playing golf. How can that not be fun???

The lower my index gets (or got), the more I enjoy the game.

I am happy as long as I am playing the sport! Love to be on the links and with my friends/relatives who play, and my varsity team........

I really cannot say that a certain handicap made me enjoy golf more. Playing on a good tract with golfers with a lower handicap than mine made me play better and enjoy a great day playing golf. No matter what my handicap is, playing with three guys who are always looking in the heather for their ball, duffing shots, 3 and 4 putting greens and whining about it is not enjoyable regardless of what my handicap is. Playing in a flight with cheaters that you have to watch constantly is not fun regardless of my handicap.

I'm having more fun now than I've ever had before, and my handicap continues to drop like a rock. I'm guessing that's going to change soon here though

But I've always loved playing, it's just much more fun now that I can somewhat control the ball.

I think I had more fun in club tournaments when I was an 11. Now that I'm a 6, I have no margin for error and I get beat by sandbaggers. But I still love playing the game, especially with my son who is now a 4. Love to see him hit incredible shots and shoot low scores even when he's not having a great ball striking day. We push each other to play better. So now is good too.

    • Day 11, 1/11/26.  Today was putting, along about 6' of carpet, with coins on the ground to keep me cognizant of what I'm doing.  I think this is the at-home drill from LSW. (Ugh, missed two of the last four days -- 1/10 and 1/8)
    • Day 9: 2026.01.11 Hit some balls at the range, concentrating on weight distribution at address, got some on film.
    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
