I have a WICKED slice. You know its bad because i wrote how bad it is in capitals . Anyway, I don't want to say you can "cure a slice" but what can I do to, i don't know, dampen or lessen it, let's say. Any tips, or anything I can do. My driver is listed in my signature....Cobra LD Speed 10 degree stiff shaft, Golf pride grips Tour ax shaft......

Take your normal set-up. Move back foot a full 18" backwards (not kidding). Start swinging. You might scare everyone around you, but you'll quickly learn the feeling of bringing the club back on plane and bringing it forward inside to out. Pay attention to the feeling and then try to replicate with a more standard set-up.

you know, I've thought about that drill quite a bit and isn't it more or less about your right hip getting in the way of the downswing. In other words, your hips are firing too quickly causing your swing to move outwards and become steep?

See, you've got the recipe all wrong. You need twenty percent luck, ten percent skill, five percent concentrated power of will. Fifteen percent pleasure, fifty percent pain, and one hundred percent reason to remember the name!

Should be all set now.

Also, try the right foot back drill as a starter, then post a video of both swings.

Slicing is almost always caused by a swing that is over the top. The drill mentioned above is good. You can also picture in your mind the feeling of throwing a frisbee underhand with your right hand during the downswing. This feeling will force you to drop your right hand on the downswing, making it a LOT easier to swing in-to-out.

if it's a pull slice, keep your torso behind the ball and swing towards right field. if it's a push slice, scooch up closer to the ball.

I agree. Where your ball starts is a major factor in determining if you need to just fix the face, or the face and the path.

Ok I'll clear it up. It is a push slice. It starts out straight or to the right of the fairway, and quickly darts farther to the right.....

Tried that today, work for the first few then started hooking. But, did help thanks

Then I'd say you are coming over the top, and sometimes with an open club face. Most likely you will do good by working on getting your hands deeper, but without video it is a toss up. I've seen players get deep on the backswing, but really loop at the top and come way out-to-in.

Moving the back foot back may work, but as a permanent fix, I'd rather start working on it with a normal setup. It is not impossible to get rid of this, and I think moving the foot back just makes it take longer to get right.

It's an over the top slice. If it started only hard right, and continued to turn, it would be a push slice. But %99.999 of the time it's an over the top slice, and I've yet to see anyone struggle from a push slice that was "wicked." All you need to do is eliminate the over the top move, and to do that, you have to swing toward the slice. Try to hit the ball dead right, as far right as you can, and it will go straight or left.

That's what should happen. Those that struggle with a 'wicked' slice need to feel and see the ball turning in the opposite direction, sometimes just to prove to themselevs that its possible. The idea is to then return the back foot and keep the same swing principles. Could be considered a quick fix, but I look at it more of a teachning aid.

You need to post a video, it is all guesses until then. By the way I believe that driver has an extra long shaft. That is not going to help someone who is trying to control the club face at impact. You might want to choke up an inch or two until you get things under control.

My suggestion is to take a lesson with someone who uses video.

Not necessarily. When I get sloppy, I hit the same shot without coming over the top (according to my instructor). He could be coming at the ball too steeply, and he's most likely hitting the ball with his hips closed to the target. Until we see a video, it's all guesswork.

Unfortunately, simply swinging "as far right as you can" will not guarantee a straight shot. You still have to get the club face square/closed in relation to the path you are swinging on.

Understanding the proper ball flight laws helps a ton. Erik has a video on his channel and here is another good one: Also, do yourself a favor and get Brian Manzella's Never Slice Again video. Best $20 you will ever spend on golf instruction.

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
