I have struggled my entire gold career with a slice. I would go entire outings without hitting one tee shot into the fairway. Well, after suffering through this torment all summer, I have made huge progress in fixing my swing.

For me, the problem was all in my shoulders. I was coming down to fast with my arms and trying to power the ball with my arms, and my shoulders were lagging behind, not to mention that instead of a smooth pivot I was dipping my back shoulder down. This made the club face open up on impact, since when my arms were out front, my palms were facing more up and down than perpendicular with the ground. By REALLY concentrating on swinging my shoulders faster and precisely with my arms, I can stop the club face from opening and hit it 100% straight. It certainly feels a lot different than my old swing, and now my power comes from my torso, which is how I believe it should be. It is easier to keep my wrists locked this way also.

I still struggle a bit with my slice, but it is only when I forget to strictly apply my new swing.

Just thought I would share-- it took a lot of terrible shots for me to finally realize the problem and address it.

Just one question I hope you can clarify for us. Where would the golf ball start before it sliced? In other words, after ten yards off the tee, where was the ball going before it sliced? Left of or at the target (fairway)???

Wait you went at the ball too much with you arms and you shoulders lagged behind?....but arms are connected to the shoulders....do you mean you started the downswing with your upper half? Im confused lol

At the target but then very quickly curve over. A LOT.

I guess when I say my shoulders were behind I'm saying that I kind of dipped my back shoulder which would turn my left palm up (im a lefty). Its like I was leaning backwards away from the ball when I hit it.

I asked the question and you answered:

Then your clubface isn't open. I'll say that again: if the ball starts at the target then your clubface is not open.

Take that for what it's worth - I think you might have found a quick fix and if it's anything more, it's changed your swing path, NOT your clubface.

Surely if your arms got out in front, if must have been from starting the downswing with your upper half and not the hips creating an over the top move slicing the ball with maybe a square club face because you said you started it at the target, I dunno how you fix that problem in the way you did, maybe you aliment was messed up....?

Interesting. I think that might be my problem. My usual slice starts going in the direction of the target and then turns to the right, and I mean, it REALLY TURNS to the right.

I tried using a strong grip and I didn't slice off the tee for 7 out of 9 holes.

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
