so, i've been working with a swing coach for a few weeks. he re-aligned me as i was closed to my target and coming pretty far inside with my hands and swinging for right field. well, this really only allowed me to hit one shot, a draw anywhere from 5 to 15 yards. so now i'm square to slightly open, with hands staying in front of my body. and when i swing to right field it actually goes there, instead of starting out slightly right of my target then coming back. so i'm trying to get the feeling of swinging at the target instead of to the right of it. has anybody gone through such a change? any advice?

I'd say I have. When I changed my swing path from out-to-in to in-to-out, I started overdrawing and hooking a lot. What I do to prevent it is trying not to swing the club to the right, but in-square-in, with a slightly in-to-out path. I get the hands deep on the backswing, but when I come through the ball, the left arm disconnect from the body and goes out to the right. I focus on getting my left arm closer, arm pit pressure, and getting the hands closer to my body through impact. My shots has started going straight again.

The reason you are now hitting the ball straight right is because the clubface is more open, similar to the angle of your swing path. A straight push. When you are drawing the ball, the clubface is aimed somewhere inside the swing path.

I used to always be closed and have since opened up a little. Like you I try to be square and sometimes maybe a little open. It's been a struggle at times to get used to the new alignment. I can see the differences though when I execute properly, if I'm swinging well the ball just goes dead straight....I never used to hit balls dead straight, ever. Stick with it.

thanks guys. it is a work in progress i guess. kind of embarrassing not to be in control of my general shot direction, let alone working the ball like i'm used to doing. thanks zeph, i'll remember the advice about the left arm.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
