This is my first real post, I've been reading for a while, just never had anything to ask. Anyways...

The irons I currently play are the old Ping eye 2 coppers. My father recently got a set of the Callaway x18s and I hit them one day when we were playing. I was much more consistent and had 1 1/2 to 2 club lengths further on distance. I am planning on getting a new set of irons soon, and I am pretty much sold on the X series.

My question is, is there any real difference between the 18s, 20s, 22s that is worth the price increase? If there is I am willing to upgrade to the 20s and possibly even the 22s, but I wanted to hear what the forum had to say before I tried them out again.

Thanks.

All solid irons, but no real differences with each successive model. You may find you prefer the X-Tour to the X-18, or X-20 Tour to the X-20, but even there the differences are not large. I'd pick whichever one you can get for the best price that has a shaft in it that you like.

i have the X-20's, they have been a great club. That being said i am ready to get rid of them. They are game improvment irons and as my swing has improved i find the offset creating more of a problem then a help. bottom line is for a 12 to 20 HC or even lower depending on your game they are a great club and I would recommend them highly.

Thanks.

X20 Tours had an MPF = 716, Super Game Improvement.

X22 Tours had an MPF = 594, Game Improvement. Overall, the Tours have a smaller head than the standard Xs (less drag in rough), less offset, and a higher Vertical Center of Gravity. Higher VCOG makes it easier to hit ball lower when you want to. Tours also have more shaft variety. I play standard X20s, and one benefit of them is a nice, dull nickel type of finish. X20 won't show the dings and bag wear as much as the superchromed X models. We discussed the X series a lot last year. I play x20 tours and love them. Even though the word "tour" is attached to them, they're still very forgiving cavity backs, and they don't really look like blades at address. The big difference is the lack of significant offset in the tours comparerd to the standards which for me makes them much more workable; it's not easy to hit a fade with a club with huge offset for me. Also, at least for X20 and X22's, the shafts were superior (Project X).

I play with the x-22s and I couldn't be happier (only if I got them lengthened like I should have/still need to)

I play the x-22 tours, and positively love them. the non tour are just to bulky for me and have that offset. the tours are still cavity back and are very forgiving. As a single digit handicapper, i would encourage you to demo the tours.

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
