The last 3 years have been a battle with my golf. I have started to hit the ball inside left (closer to the hosel) of center on the club face. It's worse on the shorter clubs and yes I sometimes hit the dreaded you know what. I know there are alot of factors that can cause this issue, but I am hoping to try and find some advice or even better drills from someone that has cured there's.

Much appreciated for any help

Here's one idea, It wont cure your swing but it'll fix the problem.

Set up with the ball off the toe of the club?

It is not unheard of for people to shank just as much, even when they address the ball on the toe.

It is short sighted to assume that they are simply standing too close to the ball. There are several things that can cause the shanks. Heck, standing TOO FAR from the ball can cause the shanks, because people them subconsciously move towards the ball on the downswing, and if they move too close.......shank!

One drill you could try (don't know who to credit it to) - gripping a tee underneath each armpit.

Perhaps the lie angles on your irons are wrong for you? Get measured. But i also hit the ball slightly on the toe side of center. In most forged players clubs, its where the sweet spot is anyway.

Hi there,

I know how you feel having battled the shanks for the last 6 months! They've gone now and i know why i had them. A question for you; Do you have a flat swing plane?

Well, if you are like me you may have developed a slight over the top move. Which, for me resulted in hitting the ball closer to the heel of the club face, sometimes deadly close to the hosel. Get your swing filmed to see what the problem is.

Is your right arm flexed (bent at the elbow) at address? If so, this could be a problem....a while back I was trying to get my right hand/arm really soft and, as a result, ended up with a bent right elbow at address....well, on the downswing my right elbow was not bent and then, of course, my club head was a couple of inches farther from my body......shank-o-potomus

Some flex may be fine (and certainly you don't want it rigid), but mine was a bit too soft....

Much appreciated for all the tips guys.

What I will do is post a link up with my swing and then maybe that will give you chaps a better idea of what I am doing wrong.

Personally I think it has to do with my hands. I feel that my left hand is too strong, meaning that I lead with it too much which gives no room for my right hand to turn my wrists over. My grip always wears out on my left thumb first, so I don't know if that is an indication that I am holding too tightly.

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
