The Pro still has the edge, but you've got a shot!

I like your chances with that setup but I admit to being ignorant about just how good a pro would be in person on that kind of course. I don't know your game that well but with 4 tries you can take a safe shot (like a hyrid or an iron on a par 5) then have 3 chances to go for it (like a 3 wood to get you on or near the green). It sounds like a lot of fun win or lose. Take the bet, let us know what happens.

I would guess that the pro will shoot around 2 or 3 under par, and as a 2.6 you will shoot around 6 or 7 under par or even more than that. 4 tries on every shot! Even if it's a tough course, I don't see how you would bogey more than one or two holes at the most, and you'll make a lot of birdies. I like your chances by a lot.

Handicap is a guess because I haven't established one yet.Best score so far is a 71 on a 6,509 yard 70.3/121 par 72 muni, during a glorious...

Having played several rounds a few years back with a Tour player that couldn't keep his card and seeing how good he was on a daily basis, I would bet that the Top 100 player wins.

Now a 3 handicap is outstanding but it is not a +4 or +5. I would take the challenge and only play the extra balls when needed (approaches and putting). Post the outcome and highlights as this sounds like a great time.

If he shoots 2 under, i'll win. An average score for him out there in non-tournament conditions is around 5 or 6 under. I know i'd need to shoot 6 or 7 under to win.

I would bet on you. Four chances at every shot.. you have so many opportunities to be aggressive once you have a ball in a decent spot. I played a scramble yesterday with 3 guys who are worse than I am and we shot 62 on a pretty tough course. Granted its nowhere near the course you're describing, but we're nowhere near your HI either.

With four chances at every putt especially, I think you can fire 7-8 under and clean up. Unfortunately I would also call it a safe bet that he has more money to throw away on golf bets than you do, (nothing personal, honestly) so you may have a bit more pressure. But I could be wrong there too I guess.

If no money involved, I like your chances better.

I'm sure the Pro executes better under pressure..
Sure you have 4 shots at a 12 footer.. but with money on the line, can you hit one?
pros can.. so.. i don't know.. fun time indeed!

Here's the proposition. Some of you may know that I am friends with a regular on the PGA tour. (not a star but consistently in the top 100 in $$ every year). I'll be visiting him in a few months and we've been discussion a potential bet.

as a two handicap, he shouldn't stand a chance. you should be at least 6 or 7 under with four attempts per shot. although, there might be some pissed of guys behind you.

+1 - I agree - Heck...I'm an 8 handicap and I think I would take this bet. Like one of the earlier posters said, I've played in a bunch of scambles where I'm the 'hired gun' and the other guys are 15-20+ handicaps and we usually shoot 8-10 under. Granted, this would be 'from the tips' and most scrambles are played from the 'whites', so that would add some interest to it. I'd still say I could shoot 3-4 under, with a really good up/down percentage those times I did miss the green and a good number of putts rolled in.

I'll take a guess: Tim Herron. I believe he is from close to the OP's listed location. Also, he used to live in Arizona, but recently moved back to MN.

Did you say how much the bet is? Or is that on the down low?

With him being able to lift, clean and place....he will probably be attacking some pins!

Good luck!!!

    • Amazing picture.   One of my favorite vacations!
    • I can see how some people might not think or know it is how they are pushing against the ground that causes your hips to spin in a certain way. It makes sense when he describes torque. Also, that PGA Tour average is like 2x more push with the left leg than the right leg.  Yea, if someone is very right side dominant, or just has a weakness in their left leg, they could struggle with early extension no matter how they try to keep the tush back. Even if you feel your left leg extend, if the direction of the force is not pushing the hip back and up behind you, it can push your leg back and away from the target more, which is not ideal.  Pending muscle weaknesses and mobility, I almost feel like early extension is solved at this point.
