I was wondering what would be the best way to go about finding an instructor and what kind of money I would be excepting to drop for a lesson or two to correct my swing(I have a tendency to hit it right, so I figured before it becomes permanently part of my swing, I would like to have the matter rectified).

Have you thought about uploading your swing to swingacademy.com, to youtube(then posting it here), or signing up for Golf Evolution's lesson deal?

Just a couple other options in case you weren't aware of them.

personally, i'd instruct a 36 capper to get some hands on training to learn what a proper swing feels like first.

OP, there used to be a link on pga.com where you could search for instructors in your area but it's being worked on now. if i were you i'd go to a mom and pop golf shop, not a large one cause they'll try to sell you lessons there, and ask the proprietor who's a good instructor for a decent price(assuming you're on a budget). you could probably get a good lesson for around 50 bucks an hour +/- 10 bucks. they usually offer package deals for three lessons with one half off.

That's a valid point. I just wanted him to be aware of these options in case he wasn't.

most courses have pro's, most ranges have either a pro or a stack of business cards with instructors.

price varies depending on where you are at, experience of the teacher etc. My neck of the woods (Rural E. Texas) a former PGA tour player at my course is $40 for 1/2 hour, $60 for an hour, $250 for a 5 pack of 1 hour lessons. The actual "head pro" is $40, $50, $225. If one of the younger guys is giving lessons it's cheaper as well.

I don't know the quality of instruction, but if I lived in a bigger city I'd probably be tempted to check the local community colleges as I recall seeing a course listing and begining golf was one of them.

I went to Detroit's Craig's List and did a Services serch for "golf+lesson" and saw several options there. Before going ahead with a lesson, I would interview them about their background, qualifications, and experience.

In addition to lessons, you might want to pick up Hogan's 5 Lessons book. It's inexpensive and great for fundamentals.

I've taken lessons from 4 different instructors without a huge amount of improvement. Last year I signed up for 10 lessons from Golftec (Golfsmith). They hook you up to an electronic monitoring shoulder and belt harness with cameras at 2 angles. I could see when I was off plane. Each shot measured shoulder and hip turn and face angle of the club. These videos were available on your home computer for study. I was also given exercises to improve shoulder turn, etc. After the 10th lesson, the instructor also offered advice during 9 holes of golf, which was part of the package. These lessons helped me more than any of the other 4 instructors.

I have since gone to stack & tilt, but the foundation from Golftec remains.

Thanks to everyone who posted, I've decided to go with a 5-pack of lessons, one on one with a pro, now I can take my first real steps in improving my game!

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
