Driving anomaly

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem. Some times I leave the driver in the bag because I'm such a short hitter with it.I normally get it out there about 250. I can hit my 5 iron 210 and my 3wood about 240 so there is no reason to hit it.

Well thursday I decided to play and every hole was the same nothing past 260 besides the 14th hole I hit a gps confirmed 308. Today I was hitting it even shorter 240 or 245 when I walk up to a par 5 and hit a gps confirmed 325 all conditions were normal no tail wind or anything. Sucks knowing that I'm not really a short hitter, I'm just awful 99.99% of the time.

Dont let anyone call you a short hitter. You can play from tips and be fine, even if you hit your 5 iron less than 200, which you dont.

But, it sounds like you dont hit in the sweet spot often.

Heck, you are fine hitting it 250. On even a 450 yard par 4 that leaves you a soft 5 iron into the green.

I don't consider my self a short hitter with anything but the driver. I actually think I hit it above average. It just weird the huge discrepancies you get from hitting one flush to hitting one a little off. I'm talking over 50 yards. I'll be hitting my usual 250 then all of sudden by golf buddies are wondering how I just blew it by them once every 2 rounds

Short answer, you clearly swing extremely hard but generally miss the sweet spot. Do a search here on the forum for "smash factor". The simplest way to start hitting more drives in the screws would be to shorten your shaft.

Hitting it far and blowing it past your friends is fun. Hell it's one of the things I enjoy most when I play with my buddies. On the other hand, I have even more fun, when I can hit an iron onto the green from 100-150, and watch them hit it short, left, right. I say straight is better than long. Course long AND straight is even better.

I can hit my driver 220-230!

Just tee off with a 5i and you'll be playing off 18 easily.

If 250 is considered a short hitter then I would love to be a short hitter. I'm happy if I hit it 215.

I hit the Driver 270-280, but It's very rarely straight.So most of the time I go with a wood or 3 iron off the tee, and still easily have enough distance to have birdie chances.So if you can hit your 5 iron 210, why not just keep doing that?There's no shame in not being able to hit a Driver very well, all with long irons it's the hardest club to hit.It's just a case of being able to quiet the ego and telling yourself you don't need to whack it out there 270.Being 220 yards down the centre of the fairway is far better than being down there 270 in bad rough, or in bushes.That said, if you really want to improve with the Driver, being fitted for one would be a big help I'm sure.Shaft could be too long for you etc.

You too? Seriously though, how much farther can you hit your 3w than your 5-iron? > 30 I suspect. Compared to his impressive 5-iron distance, his 3 wood and driver do seem short. Or inconsistent anyway.

I generally hit mine 250 then slowly it goes another 40 yards to the right.

I still dont get how anyone can get irons so far compared to my same irons. driver avg is 265 ,3 wood 225, then 2 iron 190

I don't get why your 3 wood is only 225 (compared to a 265 driver average) and how is your 2-iron less than 200 yards? Something doesn't add up.

They can't. Most of the time it's someone recollecting how far they once hit their 5 iron when they blew it over the back of the green at 185 and it rolled for another 35 yards!

Unless you're one of the longest hitters on tour with 5 iron that has 21 degress of loft you don't hit it 210!

my cleveland xls tour 8.5 degree averages 265 from the tee . my tour edge 15* 3 wood averages 225 yards (this club was popular in 1998 ; ) . I can lean on it a bit for another 10 but that isnt average . my ping eye 2 becu blackdot will go on average 190 it was popular in 1978 . this is what I`m playing and it leaves a pretty big gap

I thought the Eye 2 were introduced in the early 80s, but I see your dilema. Methinks you need a serious 3-wood upgrade.
