I thought the Eye 2 were introduced in the early 80s, but I see your dilema. Methinks you need a serious 3-wood upgrade.

thanks , I`ll be sure to show your post to the wife : )

well in my defense my irons are callaway diablo edges and the five iron has a loft of 25* that's almost a 3 iron in most sets. I if I hit a a great shot I track it with skydroid on my cellphone. I would say its accurate to about 3 yards. Also I'm 24 and about 230 with a huge john daily gut, so there is a lot of weight behind me. Really not just wanted to know if anyone sucks bad enough to be so erratic. Anyway still shot an 87 so it was a great day for me.

I still dont get how anyone can get irons so far compared to my same irons. driver avg is 265 ,3 wood 225, then 2 iron 190

Generally taller guys like me. I dropped the driver for years because I could tag long irons pretty far. I played with a 3 wood and a 2 iron for a long time. A low 2 iron with some run was about the same length as my 3 wood on the fly. If I needed carry distance, I would hit the 3 wood. I was never into tracking my distance, but I found that I could comfortably keep up with 90% of my playing partners, and keep the ball fairly straight at the same time.

To the op, i feel your pain. Im about a 30 handicap too. For some reason I can only consistantly carry my driver 290 or so. This is wierd because I have decent distance with my irons. These are my yardages (i can add 10 or 20 yards if i really need to) pw-160, 9i-175, 8i-190, 7i-200, 6i-210, 5i-225, 4i-240, 3i-250, 2i-265, 1i-275.

I just wish i didnt hit my driver so short. Its frustrating because i rarely drive a green and only hit 85% of par 5's in 2.

Is your shot shape consistently a fade or a draw? A draw will add about 30 yards of distance with the forward spin and forward roll. Also, does your shot seem to shoot way up in the sky, or does it have a nice flat trajectory? That will also either shorten or lengthen the result.

Even par through 9 is my best.  I don't even want to think about what was my worst.

Is that the only inaccuracy you see in his post? He's being a jokester.

Because 90% of people on this forum are full of BS about their handicap.

You're probably right - some haven't moved up or down in a year - how likely is that?

of all the things that I said in that overly sarcastic post, you only noticed the fact that my handicap wasnt consistant. I figured that me saying that I hit my 1 iron 275 (or me saying that I only hit 85% of par 5's in 2) would be a pretty clear sign that I was just trying to point out that the op is full of it.

He claims to be a 30 handicap, yet he scores an 87, hits a 5 iron farther than the average golfer's drive, and (as a 30 handicap) is unhappy with only carrying it 250 yards.

Im also guessing that he just started this year and the only reason why he isnt a scratch golfer is because hes a terrible putter.

You're not a short hitter, I'm a short hitter.

3-Wood: 160-180 (200 if lucky)
5-Iron: 150
6-Iron 130-140
and so on...

I don't hit my driver because it doesn't go as far as my 3-wood due to the slice I always get off my driver. I think I might have too much driver for me to handle at this point.

I have never changed me Cap since coming to the site. Last few rounds have been 87 88 92. I didn't say I was carrying my driver 250. I said I was hitting it 250. Second why would I come to a golf forum for help and lie about my distances. When I played Thursday I hit a 5 iron into a 205 yard par 3 hit about a 10 yard draw almost a hook and found my self pitching from and area back and left of the green. This post wasn't about how far I hit a 25* 5 iron but how bad I must suck to hit a 300 yard drive( with roll out) once every 50 swings and not be able to hit it 260 the rest of the time.

Yeah you better have your ducks in a row before you post cause it can be like a pack of angry dogs in here at times.

Well I would recomend that your story is more consistant from the beginning next time. I still dont buy it that you hit a 5 iron 220 or whatever you said, but as for the driver make sure that you are squaring the clubface up and making solid contact. This is the only thing that could be causing you to hit a 300 yard drive on occasion and less than 250 other than that.

My swing for example is just under 100 mph when I do everything right, when i dont its closer to 90. Yes 10 mph is alot, but thats not the difference between when I hit the ball 265 and when i hit it 200. A huge majority of this 65 yards is that Im not making solid contact. I know someone who has a fundamentally terrible swing, but he gets the clubface square and makes solid contact, hes a single digit handicapper.

Make solid contact and youll hit the ball alot further.

A couple things: - Every golfer that averages 250 yards off the tee will eventually hit a 300+ yard drive "once every 50 swings" mainly because every so often you'll have a hard/fast, downhill fairway that you are hitting onto and you just happened to hit the ball on the screws with your typical 110% driver swing. It does NOT mean that is what you average. I consider myself an extremly long hitter, and I average about 290 off the tee (120+ mph SS). Every so often my SkyCaddie will tell me I hit a drive 325-330, but it has so much more to do with the particular situation than it does my normal, "average" swing. - I don't think it's so much that people think you are lying as it is that they think you don't know what your average distances really are. Most people think they hit their irons about 10-15 yards further than their true averages. Most of the time it's because the average golfer swings his irons at 100% trying to hit it as far as possible. Seeing as they almost never hit the sweet spot with this type of swing, thier distances are all over the place; needless to say the only distance they think of during club selection is that one perfectly struck ball they hit two years ago that caried that distance. Average distances should include mis-hits and not just perfectly struck shots.

    • I played in an outing a few years ago. The course was wet, and it was windy. We all did bad enough to reward us with a PCC of +1 (If I am remembering this correctly). So all of our differentials went up 1.  So, if that score is part of my best 8 out of 20. That means I am getting 1/8th of a differential improvement. For you to get a PCC, you need enough people submitting their score for handicap during that day. Let's say you were the only person who was submitting the score for handicap, odds are you are not getting a PCC.  Which is fine, because no handicap system can be that nuanced. I don't think you'd want it to be. Still, my statement is correct. It takes into account weather and abnormal difficult conditions.
    • I’ve been rather surprised how my original question relating to the logic behind “differential vs course handicap” elicited the responses expressed on this thread so far. I suppose it shows that there are many who have given this subject a lot of thought. I personally like the current system for the same reasons stated in the post by saevel25 and it works very well in our league. I just needed to get the reasoning/logic clear in my head so I could explain it succinctly to those who had questions. Regarding the ongoing discussion, the only tweak we make is only the scores made in league competition count. (We don’t use GHIN, we do the calculation ourselves.) The only additional thought I had is perhaps the powers that be can come up with a method, when doing the differential calculation, of giving greater weight to the rounds played more recently than those from 20 rounds ago. I’ve been testing this with an idea I had similar to the way colleges calculate GPA’s based on credits offered by different classes, but honestly, the complexity it adds to the calculation isn’t worth the trouble as any change made has proven to be inconsequential.
