Those who dislike US Open, did you also dislike Open Championship?

The Open Championship offered us gray, dreary skies, temps in the 60s (in the middle of summer?), 30 MPH winds, waist-high rough, huge changes in weather depending on your tee time.

Most guys struggled, whereas a few seemed to thrive... Many fans on these boards complained about the quality of the golf being played at the US Opens, and how the setup punishes the players - not sure I see much difference at the Open Champ.

If you didn't like Pebble this year, how could St Andrews be considered any different?

I disliked the Pebble setup, but only because it wasnt suited to the course. I thought St. andrews was more than fair. At St Andrews youre always at the mercy of the elements. You have to fight through them or take advantage of the lucky breaks, which Oosethelien??? did. The US and British opens are the only real majors, IMO.

I enjoyed the St. Andrews set-up quite a bit more. What I didn't like about the US Open was a few holes that were nearly impossible to hit the ball reasonably close, and where a great shot would end up in basically the same shape as a mediocre shot (like number 17, where any shot that carried to the hole would funnel down off the green). I like it much better when great shots are consistently rewarded with birdie chances, and I feel like that was the case at The Open. Sure, luck played a pretty big role with wind, but that's a part of tournament golf and doesn't bother me at all. I really enjoyed watching Oosthuizen play superb golf all week long. He made it look easy!

Thats why I love the Open Championship. They dont make a course artificially difficult like the USGA does. They make some minor changes, but mostly let the course stand on its own merit.

Most US Open courses and PGA Championship courses would be torn apart by the pro's if it were not for browning the greens and growing the rough in.

Did you see what they did to St Andrews when the weather was good... tore it apart! That's why the usga and pga makes the course difficult so they don't have to rely on the elements. When the wind is blowing St Andrews is a tough track but if it's not it's not a hard course. The other problem is the U.S. open doesn't play have a lot of stops where the elements can be a factor. That's why they set them up so difficult because they don't want a 16 under winning a U.S open. It's 2 totally different types of golf and I enjoy both of them.

Apart from the really bad wind on Friday, The Open was mostly watchable.Had it's dull moments as all tournaments do, but overall it wasn't too bad.Pebble was a snoozefest from start to finish. At St Andrews, the players could score when the wind wasn't too bad, but they weren't allowed to at Pebble. It's beyond me why they persist with this policy of 'par golf', it makes for extremely boring viewing.Apart from the playoff with Tiger and Rocco in 08, when was the last great U.S. Open?06 was only memorable for Phil's collapse at the end, Angel winning at +5 at Oakmont?Michael Campbell?Just my opinion but to me the US Open never attains the level of excitement of some of the other Majors. The finish to last year's PGA Championship was more exciting than any US Open in the last decade, bar Tiger/Rocco.
A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

I thought the fourth round of the U.S. Open last year was high drama. Thrilling. Remember Phil's meltdown in the 18th at Oak Hill a few years ago? The U.S. Open can deliver just fine.

I like the British not because it is always such outstanding and dramatic golf (though Harrington's win at Carnoustie was certainly was), but I like to see the ball on the ground for a change. I like to see the ball run 50 yards onto the green instead of flying on and releasing three feet. I like to watch the links style of golf.

We can't have a dramatic tournament every year, but we can have fun watching a different style of golf, and these two tournaments certainly provide it.

I heard that Peter Aliss called John Daly's putt from off one of the greens on Thurs. a ''pittenweem scuttler'' doing commentary either online or maybe for a British network... You don't get that in any other championship.

I have no qualms with watching the pros play shots they're not used to and seeing someone with a gorgeous swing put on a clinic of how to eat a golf course alive. I wasn't that bored.

And don't mind watching the guys struggle as hard as I do make par, as we see in the US Open.

    • Day 37, June 10.  Today was primarily WFH, so I had several practice sessions (indoors, off a mat, into the net).  At least one each of U, 9, and 6-iron full swings with the usual priority.   I also tried a few times a putting type stroke with my 4H, as something I should probably learn how to hit (and what it does), but the mechanical shot at home off a mat doesn't tell me much of what it's doing.  That's something I should probably try on a real green, not during a round until I've tried it.
    • Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.
    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
