Hi all,

My around the green game has really fallen apart so I figured I would get some video of it and ask for some help.

first a little shot - 10 yards that I have to carry 7 yards of rough. This is the first time I have videoed my self and when I saw this, I could see allot wrong right away, mainly I am taking the club way too far back and then I decelerate into the ball. I am interested in other thoughts:

Second is a little 40-50yard shot. This looks a bit better to me, but my hands are not far enough in front of the club at impact and I am sure there are other issues.

Narrower stance, weight more forward, and start turning through the shots a bit sooner (while the club is still ascending a bit).

Don't worry about the shaft being forward so much either, particularly on the shorter shots.

Seems like a lot of release for such short shots. I prefer to thrust weight forward and hold the club off. Heck, short game (and putting) is the one part of this game I feel I actually know somewhat well. For me, the short game is all about having something you're comfortable with, and trusting it. Trust is so important, it can't be overstated.

More the of the hinge and hold? I am trying to get back to that, I have been working on a 'looser" swing for my full swing and it migrated down to these shots. This video was an eye opener for me for sure.

Thanks, I think the timing of my turn is more of tempo thing, I am trying to be more patient and little my swing develop a bit. Thanks for the great advice.

I don't think any of that stuff really matters, hinge and hold, etc. I think so long as you have a firm base to work from, I.E. a club in the proper position to deliver to the ball with a simple slide of the hips, it's actually the easiest part of the game. It's really no different than tossing a ball. People can shoot a basket, right? Same thing, just toss the ball. And unlike basketball, you don't have defenders in your face, and you're not running, and you only need to get it close.

The real key though, is to get into a position so that natural slide or kick of the back leg drops the club down, and you can really feel the distance in your legs. Once you are consistent with that, it's a simple puzzle to unravel. Really, just set a ball down, and instead of swinging to hit the ball, swing to hit a spot 4" ahead of the ball. You can hit a really consistent bump and run this way. It's my go to shot for most situations. I take more loft as I get farther out, but also keep in mind that the longer club will hit it farther, so be cautious.

You have very good hand positions going into impact, but they fall apart a bit from there. You flip a little and chicken wing a little. These things might not be as bad to the half swing as they are to the full swing, but they both lead to inconsistency and poor contact, two things that everyone want to avoid.

I would just hit the ball trying to keep your arms straight after the shot. No release, no wrist action, no arm folding. You want to feel that you unload that lag that you accumulated then the wrists stop dead at impact, when both of the arms are straight. I wouldn't call it "hinge and hold" per se because you want to unhinge but you need to make sure you don't go too far. And by too far I mean releasing and flipping.

At least, those are some of the things I like to work on when I have problems such as yours.

So here is an update:

Working on that little chip:

And while at it some full 7 irons. This taping the swing deal I can see will be very helpful. Once I get past the depression seeing my swing causes, what needs to be fixed is very clear. Stage one - stop jumping at the ball. I know I do this when swing falls apart. Today I had good ball flight with this bad swing, I was hitting a 155 yard high draw.

When I look at this I am amazed I can even hit the ball at all.

Here is my updated swing. Feedback please? Over all I am happy with everything but impact, but I can't figure out how to hit down more on the ball and I also need to "stay down" through impact.

Okay, some things I see: On some of your swings (not all) I feel that your right elbow flies a little too much. On those swings, the separation created causes you to compensate by either coming over the top a bit or by flipping your wrists to get to the ball on time. Off the mat the flip will look like a draw but on the course could be a nasty hook.

I'd like to see you keep your elbow in a little tighter and create some lag, then really fire through with your hips and let your arms follow. A good visual aid for hitting down on the ball is to look at the front top quarter of the ball throughout your swing. I hope this helps.

Positives: Great tempo and good solid set up. The pieces are there.

Plain and simple, flip. Again, almost every double digit handicap on the planet flips, so it's one of the most important things to work on. Even many single digits flip past impact (I release too soon after impact, for example, and my left wrist cups a bit in the followthrough position.)

Second thing, the hands are too shallow. Deep hands are almost impossible to overdo. Your hands stay shallow, but the club rolls back around as you take it away. That's another issue. The hands need to get deep, your plane is too upright.

Yes I know about the flip. Still kills me that I learned to flip over the years as I used to not be a flipper.

I am not sure what you mean about shallow hands, to me take my hands back to the inside more?

Currently on the down the line view, your club goes left (deep) but your hands do not. You want to reverse that, more or less.

I think I have it:

Here is Ernie Els and Me side by side (scary thought) I can see that I have to get my left hand a little deeper, and bring my right elbow closer to my body. I have to say this video of your swing 'deal' really does reveal allot.
