A friend of mine wants to start golf and he was thinking about buying a starter set from Big Five. I told him it is better to buy used quality clubs. He asks me to recommend a set for him.

Could you please recommend a good quality used set (less than 15 yr old) that is also forgiving under $150 that he can get from ebay? It can be a major brand name like Titleist or Taylormade but doesn't have to be. Wilson, Wishon or a decend brand like MacGregor is fine.

Thanks,

At that price you could go for the ping eye2's. They're older than 15 years though and cosmetically they look dated compared to more modern designs, but performace wise they're fine.

I'm in the same boat right now. I'm either going to buy these

http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/adams-...irons-set.html

Adams Golf- 2008 Tight Lies 4-SW Hybrid Irons

or

http://www.gigagolf.com

The Giga Golf GX 922 irons.

I'm leaning toward the 922's because I can get them in graphite for relatively cheap, and I can get the lie of the club adjusted as part of the cost. I'm 5'7" and got unofficially fitted at the golf store locally, and the Ping Orange Dots (-2 degree flat) and -1/2" shaft were what fit the best.

Opinions welcomed :)

I have the Nike NDS irons. They aren't hybrids but they feel nice to me, and they are meant for higher handicap players.

I highly recommend Gigagolf. I think their clubs are by far the best you can get for the price.

They always felt dead to me - maybe their fugly appearance affected my impression of the feel though. A lot of pros used them for a long time, so you know they work. For a beginner though? To each their own.

I'm sure he could find a set of Ping g2s or maybe even a set of g5s in that price range. Look online at Edwin Watt, Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy etc. He may even try Ebay, not sure if there is a counterfeit problem with the older clubs. Just have to be careful and buy from someone with good feedback.

I wouldn't reccomend a beginner to get s58's, but the eye2's are a fine club for someone starting out. Heck even the s58's are semi cavity back and supposedly not that hard to hit. The eye2's are essentially GI irons.

That Adams tight lies set looks real nice too.

another vote for the Adam's tight lies http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/adams-...irons-set.html

The old advice was hold off on purchasing a driver and to hit a 3 wood or a long iron off the tee until more fairways were hit than not.
However, I'd recommend a cheap 12 degree driver to go along with the tight lies iron set.

I think the Ping Eye2 wins here, we will look for them on ebay and craigslist. Personally I think they are ugly but there must be a reason many people love them. There is a good deal with a set of Ping Eye2 with a Putter and a driver for under $200 on Craigslist right now. I will suggest my friend to get this.
Thanks everyone.

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
