Played in a tournament today and on the 3rd hole, 172 yd par 3, as I hit the golf ball, my 6 iron breaks in half with the head (and about a foot and a half of the shaft) flying 40 yards down the teebox while the ball still flies right of the green. My follow through was a little short and felt super weird, but I have never seen anything like that happen the 10 years I've been playing. I've seen heads fly off clubs, but never in half while the ball still flies okay.

The inside of the shaft looked looked like it could have a little bit of rust, and I was guessing thats what made the steel pretty weak to just snap like that. Would this just be from little drops of water getting inside while I soak my grips? I went on to hit a pretty good chip, short-sided, but missed the 4 footer for par. I would have used a 6 a couple more times the rest of the round but had to improvise with the 5 and 7. And now I'm out of a club...not cool.

Would Mizuno reshaft my club for free even though they don't make my irons anymore?

Odd title. "Okay?" ???????? I would have chosen a title like "Peppermint" or "Elbow?" makes about as much sense.
Something like "Will Mizuno replace my broken shaft for free?" would be a bit too cryptic and confusing.
Don't you think that it would make more sense to ask Mizuno if they'll replace the shaft?
I'd say they'd be able to give you a definitive answer. No-one here will be able to give you anything other than a guess.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Is it a Mizuno shaft?

The only way a shaft can rust from the inside out is to get some water on the inside of it. If soaking your grips is the only time they see water, then that is probably the culprit. I'd recommend plugging the hole with a tee or something from here on out.

A warning on moisture and shafts: Got to talk to a clubmaker's rep at a demo day recently, and I asked him how effective Sensicore shaft inserts were in absorbing vibration.

He said Sensicore fibers works OK, but tends to attract moisture inside the shaft. He has seen several shaft rust-outs tied to Sensicore.

He said that although Sensicore does its job, the back-of-clubhead inserts are just as effective.

Not saying you had Sensicore shafts, just a bit of info for those thinking about S-inserts.

My feeling is that it is unlikely that Mizuno will replace the shaft for free if the model of iron you're using is out of production. Iron shafts are (relatively) cheap to replace, so i dont think its that big of a deal. It will probably cost you less than $50, depending on the shaft.

PW broke last week. One of the most wild things I've seen. It broke right by the hosel.

I had a cleveland launcher comp 3 wood for a while, and I was out on the range hitting it when the shaft snaps right at the hosel, head flys down the range, I'm like, WTF? So I get the head, and give it to a friend of mine and he put in a decent shaft for me pretty quick, so I got my club back. It worked fine if not better with the new shaft, so I liked it.

So about a month later I'm hitting some crap balls into the lake, and all of a sudden the head snaps off in the same place on the shaft, and goes flying into the lake......sad sight to see when your 3 wood head is flying into the lake..... It was weird it happened in the same place with two different shafts, no idea what caused it.

Back when I was just staring golf I was taking full swings with a crappy knight chipper(Bad idea) into a net I had sep up. On one of the swing I hear a loud PING! and when I looked down I saw the clubhead rolling on the ground. The thin hosel had snapped right off. I still have the pieces and might get around to removing the broken hosel piece from the shaft so I can reuse it.

Also, I'll have to watch when I clean my grips after reading this, Although I useually just wipe them down with water and don't soak them.

I had the same thing happen to me in 1997 - my 7-iron buckled after I hit the shot, then snapped in my follow-through, cutting the top of my head. If anyone thinks I'm bullshitting, PM me and I will send you a pic of the scar (I'm bald anyway, so it's pretty easy to see).

Sorry about your 3wood but don't hit balls into the lake!

from a story about golf balls in loch ness: "The Danish Golf Union has reported that golf balls might take up to a thousand years to decompose in the wild, and as the balls break down, they’ll be releasing toxins and heavy metals into the environment. Zinc is especially dangerous because it attaches to sediments poisoning surrounding plants and animals." http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/golf-ball-pollution

    • Great year last year. Who winning this year could be another special story? Brooks? Spieth? Or Aberg? An AM? I dont know if anything could top last year
    • I love Rancho Park too!  I don't get out there much due to the 405 issues (Im in Santa Clarita) but I do try and get out there every now and then...last time out was in January where I eagled 17 (left green) with a holed 145 yard third shot ! Rancho is a great course! And at 24 bucks weekday with the city card, an absolute steal!
    • I have played PGA West, at least one or two courses in there, but I am not sure if I've played any of the courses used to host the Hope. I played a course that I think both isn't PGA West and is host to the Hope a few years ago, possibly at a TST outing, but I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the right one. I have played Rancho Park plenty of times (exactly half of my sub-80 rounds were there!) and Wilson/Harding.  Rancho Park might be my favorite golf course among those I've played more than a half dozen times.   Hopefully I'll get a chance to play TPC Scottsdale, maybe this August or September, and at some point I think there was a PGA Tour event in Las Vegas, I should get up there and play those course(s).
