Hello all,
I'm a newbie to this forum, although I've been lurking for quite some time now.
To briefly give you an idea about my golf game, I've swung a few times and had my dad's friend teach me when I was 11 (1990).
After that, never played until 2002 and started to play seriously since 2006.
Never had a professional lesson till this month.

Now that I've gained distance in all my clubs, I'm having the itch to go buy a new set of irons.(Currently playing R7 'draw' irons)
I've spent almost a day and a half hitting irons at a local Golf smith and decided to get the Mizuno MX-300.

After having my swing analyzed, the sales person tells me to just buy the irons they have in stock WITHOUT getting fitted(even with my lie being 2* flatter), play a few rounds then decide whether I like it or not.
His reason was because I lose the 90/90 playability program if I custom order.

Are the factory custom ordered clubs manufactured differently?
Meaning, do they also bend the neck when adjusting the lie or are they made that way from the get go?

Any help from you experts would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Dan

There's more to it than lie angle. You want the shaft optimizer to ensure proper ball flight and distance. You want to ensure the iron shafts are correct length. And although you like the MX-300s, you might want to try other heads, and brands. I was fitted and hit the Mizuno MP-52s, MX-300s and MX-200s, the Ping I15s and G15s. I didn't care for the G15s, yet loved the I15s and MX-300s. Yet they weren't forgiving enough for me as per all the tests. As you can see by my signature, I ended with the MX-200s. Best thing I ever did. Helped me tremendously on the course.

Thank you so much for the advice.

I did spend a good amount of time hitting different irons, but never on an open driving range until today. I noticed a little loss of distance compared to my current irons, but the feel was just amazing. I also tried out the MX-200, which was my first choice, but I liked the slightly smaller face and less offset of the MX-300s better. I know I'm not good enough of a player yet to prefer the smaller, thin top line irons, but for some reason I feel more confident hitting that type of irons. Maybe it's because I used to learn with blades when I was a kid. Anyway, I went to another local golf shop and did another fitting. I was hitting the center of the sole every time with the standard lie. Also did the shaft optimizer thingy, which returned the same result as yesterday. Average swing speed of 81, with slower tempo(3~4). Recommended shaft was the same GS95 stiff flex. Decided to order the way it turned out; standard length, lie, with mid size grip. Can't wait to get them. :) Dan

the loss in distance isn't too uncommon with new clubs. a lot of people say they noticed loss in distance (due to many variables including shaft, etc) but usually they end up adjusting and the distance doesn't become too much of a problem.

I see. Thanks for letting me know.

Hopefully, I adjust myself and also learn more how to strike the ball correctly to get consistent distance. Dan

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
