How do you control your amount of spin?

I've never really played with the softer, urethane-covered balls that are popular now, and my game has built around lower spin balls that stop, but don't spin back on the greens.

I found a Pro V1 recently, and decided to put it in play on a short par 3 yesterday. I hit a nice pitching wedge that never left the flag, and landed about 4 feet from the pin. Then, to my horror, it shot back about 12 feet - right off the front of the green! Instead of a 4 footer for birdie, I had a 16 foot chip. I got down for par, but walked away wondering how the hell you control the spin with a ball like that. Do you just aim above the hole every time, or is there more to playing with a ball that spins like that? What do you do if the pin is in the back of the green?

The harder you swing with a wedge and some short irons, higher you finish, and the more you hit down on the ball determines the amount of spin you will have, you see tour players play knock down shots and three quarter shot swings, in that situation take one more club with a 3 quarter back swing, or if your more advanced abreviate your follow through. i play all my irons and wedges, way back in my stance, (accept lobs) with 3 quarter swings cuz i tend to get way past parallel and start missing greens, so my problem has always been not enough spin.. good luck

I don't usually have this problem unless it is really soft or into a green that has a lot of back to front slope. When I do I just take an extra club, say a 9iron in your case choke down a little and hit it 3/4. Some of my best shots have come this way. Maybe because I am focused on the shot process and not how hard I am going to hit it?

This seems completely logical, and I've tried it in the past. The problem is every time I've tried it, I've still hit it too hard and flew the ball over the green.

Lots to learn, I guess.

Learning to control distance, spin, and trajectory all come from experience. Practice, practice, practice. For the most part what others have said is true, but there are little tricks to making a ball release or bite like hooding the face and moving the ball back or forward in you stance. Just experiment and see what works best for you.

I don't try to control the spin and I've not had a problem with too much spin. The way I hit the ball, a little out to in and create a high fade doesn't allow for much back spin. My ball usually hops once and backs up a foot or two. I can count on it doing that!

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
