I played a round with a scratch golfer who after quietly observing my first 5 holes, started pointing out faults and talking me through them. We worked on a handful of items over the rest of the round. By the end, I was making very good contact and getting distance I'm used to when I'm playing well, and even exceeding that on several shots.

But for the first time in my golfing career, almost every shot was a straight pull. Very little movement on the ball (occasional slight fade or draw). I did check alignment and it did not appear to be the issue.

Without seeing the swing, can anyone offer a few ideas on what causes a straight pull? Thanks-

Do you happen to struggle with a slice and found that rotating the arms to shut the clubface helps sometimes hitting a fade?

Ball starting out left means the clubface is closed, that is correct. If it goes dead straight left, you are also swinging over the top (hence my question about slice).

How to fix it? Well, you can hit a fade by having the clubface aimed less left, but I'd recommend you try getting that outside-in swingpath to inside-out.

The straight pull had been a problem for me recently. I went for a lesson last week and the pro said that in my case it was due to sliding my weight forward to the front foot instead of rotating through completely with my hips. Although I was making a nice turn on the backswing, the rest of my swing was mostly arms.

As I have worked on this, I am now successfully clearing my hips and finishing facing the target completely.

Mileage may vary on this, especially since we haven't seen your swing.

    • Yes.  Did he not hit the range before the round? When my first few pre-round drives aren't what I expect, the first thing I check is my driver settings, in case they changed.  I am on my second adjustable driver and I am still not trusting that golf gremlins don't change it between rounds. The second thing I check is my alignment and setup, and that is far more often the culprit than my settings. In any case, there are some simple things that I imagine should be on a professional player's pre-round checklist that I am surprised when they aren't.  One of those is the settings for any adjustable clubs.
    • It was also set at B1 at a previous event, and… so there's dubiousness around whether he's telling the truth (again).
