New Ping putter arrived today (bought on Ebay) ...it has what looks like a bolt in the shaft and a grip different from the Pings I tried in the store....

I wouldn't worry about the grip, as it could have just been changed... The bolt seems really odd however... It wasn't mentioned in the description on eBay?

Weird...Sweet putter though. I would just have it reshafted and regripped with the classic ping smoothie.

Listed as:

Brand New Ping Anser 2 Putter. Mens right-handed. MSRP $95.00. Bid with confidence....Pay Pal only.

I'd contact the seller about that then because I'm pretty sure that isn't how they come new... Aside from the bolt, does it seem new? Also, as said above you could just reshaft it.

None of my 5 Ansers, one of which is an Anser 2, have that bolt or whatever it is in the shaft. It'd be nice to see a picture of the head, as I can't tell from the pictures on your post whether it's new or not. I know the grip says Ping, but that doesn't look like the original grip on my Anser 2.

New? That club is nowhere near new. The grip is wrong, the clubhead shows clear marks of wear and for whatever reason, someone put a bolt through the shaft. You should complain to eBay about that buy.

I requested authorization to return and a full refund including shipping.... he has 100% positive feedback.....

That head looks new to me - a bit old, but I don't see the "clear signs of wear" the other poster was talking about. Although I haven't seen a Ping grip quite like that one before I have no reason not to believe it's not a new putter. Gotta wonder about that thing in the shaft though.

The head is new enough.

The shaft and grip, I'd say, are from a Ping fitting putter, the ones they have in shops where the lie is adjustable so that people can work out what colour dot they need.
Also, as said above you could just reshaft it.

What do you mean "just" reshaft it?

Do you know what is involved in reshafting a Ping Anser? The guy didn't order a frankenputter. The bolts weren't part of the deal. He has every right to be mightily pissed off.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

it looks like a club used for "fitting", just by the way the grip is. is it a two-piece shaft? maybe for height adjustments?

just my two cents worth...

To assess this in a clearheaded, mature manner, I must say that bolts in the shaft are a critical issue.

Of course he has every right to be pissed off... my first piece of advice was to contact the seller. Having it reshafted may be an option if he is otherwise happy with it and doesn't feel like having to deal with the entire return process. No need to get all crazy!

Thanks for the help everyone....I contacted the seller today and passed on the comments and his reply was this is a "custom" putter....and he insists that it is NEW.... so I shared the responses and was called a liar... then I was told that I was trying to rip him off???? Next I was told I had to provide the names and numbers of the "pro" golfers that told me this....so I opened a "case" against the seller... the seller has agreed to return my money and return postage now that I have an open case pending.....I mailed the putter and got a confirmation number...........thanks again everyone...

Glad that you got that resolved... any chance you could give his eBay ID so that others can avoid purchasing from him?

    • That's an interesting take.             .... I'll have to think about it for a while. .... (See what I did there?)
    • Relatively speaking I think golf is the most stupid monkey sport there is. A proper scratch player can garden-walk away with a ho-hum 75 while making the grocery list. It doesn't require supreme mental acuity to know/decide course management... i.e., you can't go wrong with FIRs/GIRs. Mentally, just need to cut out the noise and hit your stock shot shape all day to play to your physical potential. OTOH, a quarterback, a point guard or a midfielder prolly spends an order of magnitude more mental energy in decision making every play with way more options and way more negative outcomes they have to navigate and then execute. I find these sports much more cerebral. Physically, they are all hard depending on the level most avid sportsperson strive to achieve.
    • Some things I classify under mental 1) Ability to maintain or regain focus. 2) Ability to maintain strict adherence to the craft at an elite level.  The floor to even be an NFL player or NBA player is so high. In the sport itself, there is still a wide range of athletic ability. Sometimes, a person who is uber athletic has a very short career versus someone else. That could be inability to maintain a strict regime to learn the craft and execute at a high level. That is where I think the mental game matters the most.  Hand eye coordination, and touch, that is almost all physical.  Your ability to swing the club with the precision needed to achieve high level results is so difficult its really absurd.  Again, I think the mental game falls under this bin.  1) Sticking to the gameplan.  2) Practicing at a level that matches the level of golfer you want to be.  3) Ability to focus on the course.  4) Probably, knowing what type of person you are emotionally. Can you turn pressure into focus. Does pressure distract you. How to mitigate that. Stuff like that.  I think professional athletes say it is mental because they are at the top 0.00001% of their sport. So, to them the only edge left is that focus, not making that one mistake. There could just be a gap in physical talent as well.  Good luck covering Randy Moss in his prime.  Weighting how much all that stuff matters when you can't hit the ball 250 yards off the tee. Physical ability is king.
