Mizuno MP-52's Too Heavy? Recommend a lighter iron.

I went from playing the Nike Slingshot Irons last year to playing the Mizuno MP-52 Irons this year. Right off the bat, the MP52's felt heavier, but when I caught the ball well, it flew straight and long. It was a great feeling, but about 5% - 10% of the shots were horrible shanks that went into the woods. I've played about 25 rounds with them and tried everything to make the shanks go away. I never shanked like this before. I could even make it go away for a few rounds, then it would rear it's ugly head at random times.

I really believe the weight of the club is an issue. I've scoured the internet looking for weight specs on the Mizuno MP-52's (regular steel shaft) and came up with nothing. Can someone recommend a lighter cavity back iron. I shoot in the 90's despite the shanking.

With your handicap in mind, I wouldn't waste a hefty investment in clubs by blaming them for mistakes made. They may feel and play different to your old irons, but what do you expect coming from a SGI iron to a PLAYERS CAVITY BACK!

If you are in fact a 25 hcp., look into fixing the indian before you replace the arrows, as shanks are almost always swing issues.

Could be just a shaft weight difference. The heads are probably very close in weight. Lighter shafts change the way the club feels weight wise obviously. You could reshaft with a lighter weight shaft like the DG SL to get a lighter feel. I have those shafts on my Adams set and like them a lot.

In the meantime, try changing your set up to be 1/2 a ball further away (i.e. set up with the ball closer to the toe of the head). Also, get some impact tape to see where you are hitting on the face.

I play te MP-52 they are great, but with your hdc I would try others with more forgiveness.
I used to play the PING G10 they helped a lot

Do you mean overall weight of the club, or the swingweight, which is more a measure of how the club feels. Any pro shop should have a swingweight scale, which will give you the answer.

According the their websites, the Slingshots are 3/4" longer than the Mizuno's, which would increase the swingweight considerably if the heads were the same weight. But the only way to know for sure is to have them put on the swngweight scale.

Has nothing to do with shanking the ball, however.

Dynamic Golf regular shaft are 127 grams and standard weight

I played rifle shafts 5.5 that felt heavy and now I play Dynamic Gold regular shaft are standard weight. There are lighter shafts but the shanks are not caused by the weight of the shafts.

i am playing Adams OS Tech irons set, they have True Temper GS-75 steel shaft in 7-PW. True Temper GS-75 is one of the lightest steel shafts on the market, it weights about 85 gram. i shoot 145-150 yards with 7 iron in regular shaft, it's a pretty stable light shaft.

I've owned the G10's with the standard AWT shaft, Callaway X20's with the standard uniflex shaft and the MP52's with the DG Shaft and the mizunos feel the lightest of the three to me.

im not saying that the mp52's are heavy but forged iron heads can be a little heavy compared to say a cast iron with air bubbles in it, ie. Ping. They are just more dense. Thats why all ping irons are lighter than feathers.

I'll re-echo the statements about the shaft weight. I didn't think too much of it when I got my irons, but going from SGI with light steel shafts to PC with dynamic gold had to have affected something. My next set (soon, one of these days) will have lighter steel shafts.

yea shaft weight makes a huge difference too. I held a set with Highlaunch shafts that were light and then the same set with DG shafts which were heavier. The irons felt much more heavier.
