What irons would anyone recommend for a begginer golfer? Do you think it would benefit more to get super-game improvement irons or to get a set with some forgivessness but also that you can grow into?

I was thinking possibly the X-24 Callaways or the Ping G15s...won't be until next season but i was just curious.

This first time i swung a golf club was on 5/8/10....

For an absolute beginner I'd suggest something used that's been very recently re-gripped. You're gonna make a lot of ugly swings and be hitting off some pretty awful surfaces for a while - why F up a crisp new set of PINGs right away?

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

Just to clarify this was my first season. Started in may and i played every single weekend. I def have the golf bug! At the beginning on the year i picked up a complete set of Black Max Maxfli clubs.

It came as a set with these clubs:

Driver: 10.5
Woods: 3W and 5W
Hybrids: 3H and 4H
Irons: 5-PW, SW
Putter
Headcovers for the Woods and Hybrids
Bag
$229

I already had them cut and re-gripped(i am only 5'2)...I was really just curious and probably won't get new irons unless i get a really good deal in the off season.

This is ping's lie chart:

http://www.ping.com/uploadedFiles/Cu...Code_Chart.pdf It should give you a ROUGH idea as to what dot you want, although it does not take into account the length of your arms, stance, etc. looks like it shows for your height you should get a slightly flatter than standard club.

This would depend in part on how you are entering the game. If you have a teaching pro giving you lessons, or playing partners who really know something about the game, you might get some used clubs for starters. But, getting appropriate used clubs requires you, or your helpers, to know about the game.

Another option is to get a boxed set: You get a matching driver, a wood or two, a hybrid, some mid-to short irons and a putter, along with a carry bag. You can get into the game for under $300. Some adjustments can be made to such clubs for your personal build and height, if needed.

For details, see my January guest column on the topic:

Sounds like he already has a box-o-crap. He wants to upgrade.

I would look at used clubs on ebay personally. I have bought and sold several sets that I demoed until settling on the like new mp-58s I have now. I am very happy with them and they cost $500 less than if I paid for new ones.

lol exactly. I am no pro yet, but i have played every weekend(sometimes twice a weekend) since may. I have about 20-25 rounds under my belt and don't plan on stopping until the weather makes me. The bag has already seen better days, the driver was crap and i hate my putter. Don't get me wrong, they were the perfect thing for me to start with but i feel like i already have a good enough baseline to get something else. My best round was a 97 so i am not horrible...

already upgraded my hybrid and driver..irons next
