Broke 80 with a 74

Previous best 81, shot a 74 (par 72), with a 3 under 33 on the back 9!

Was 1 over through 6, then bogey, bogey, double to finish the front, with 3 putts on 8 and 9. Then overdid my normal fade on the drive into the trees right on the par 5 10th. Was thinking there goes my shot at the 70s...

But I got lucky, had a window between two trees to the pin, and bombed my 2h to 7 feet, made the eagle putt. My first ever eagle!

Then parred all the way through the par 3 17th, where I hit my 6i to about 15 feet and made the birdie, then parred 18.

Funny thing was, I only hit two really money pin-seeking shots. Just didn't make any big mistakes and, except for 8 and 9, 2-putted everything, even though 4 or 5 were from outside 50 feet (I seemed to be really good at finding whatever side of the green was exactly opposite of the pin today!). And I was solid with the wedge around the green, getting up and down four times where I put my approach shot a bit off the green.

Congrats. That must feel awesome. I broke 100 with a 94 and it was the same sort of thing. I just didnt make as many bad mistakes as I usually do and played some smart shots that paid off. After that breakthrough I feel like I'll never shoot over 95 again and I've got my goal set set firmly on 89 now. I know how it feels to play a record breaking round for me now and hopefully can just slide right back into that zone next time out. Now if people would stop coming out to visit I could get back on the course instead of being some sort of free tour guide for friends.

Fairways, greens and two putts is how i usually "go low" Which for me is around par. I probably average less than two birdies a round. Well done on the round. Remember that mindset you were in so that you dont get scared of success next time youre having a good round.

Yeah I've had to work really hard on the mental game. A couple of the 81s I've hit I only needed to keep playing the way I'd been playing to hit 78 or 79 and got scared of success exactly as you said and blew up. Every time I hit a bad shot now or start thinking about what I need to score on the last N holes to hit X, I have sort of a mantra of just forget the last shot, forget the next shot, swing easy and jar THIS shot. Finally paid off!

Almost embarrassed to say. Encino from the blue tees. It, Balboa, and Rancho are the only three courses (among the city or other public courses I can afford or get on!) I can get back from in time to get my buddy to work at a reasonable time.

70.8 rating, 112 slope, 6863 yards, give or take. A bit shorter today as some of the blues were up at the back of the forward teebox.

Nice job on the back nine - maybe you relaxed thinking 80 was out of the question, but didn't stop grinding. I played a round like that on Sunday. 6 over after four holes but ended up with my low 18 of the year.

i am very familiar with all those courses. 74 is a good score on encino for sure! i play there quite often as a test to see how low i can go and its a bit sneaky. 11 is quite a tough hole. congrats on the score that must feel good. encino was the first course i shot under par on and it was because i birdied 18. its very tough to keep a good round going.. playing one shot at a time is very cliche but very true.

Thanks. Yeah, encino can get sneaky, though I've found Balboa to be sneakier. You look at the scorecard and it's so short you think it has to be easy, but it's less open than encino and the greens are super tiny.

And does first sub-par at encino mean you break par at hard courses on a semi-regular basis now? So can I expect to start breaking 80 on harder courses every once in a while now?!
