I decided to try recording my swing when I got home from work today. This is an old MacGregor 7 iron I use to keep the soil broken up in the backyard. Just looking for impressions/suggestions.

Looks pretty good down the line. Your forward tilt looks a little too pronounced, but you are consistent with it.

Your hands are coming way outside on the back swing and you're probably losing a lot of power that way. Keep them close to you on an inside arc. Think of how a field goal kicker runs up to the ball from an inside angle, instead of from straight behind it. Hope that makes sense. Keep the hands close to your body.

I see what you mean. Makes perfect sense. Would this promote and out to in swing that could be causing a fade?

Absolutely.

First of all, I have seen a big improvement in my ballstriking since reading the "deep hands" thread. My question is at what point in the takeaway should I start taking my hands "deep". It seems that if I take them deep too soon, the clubhead gets well inside my hands at parallel. Should I start straight back until a certain point and then go deep with the hands, or is there something else I am doing wrong? I will try to post another video as soon as i can.

I didn't understand this either initially and was hooking almost every shot. The simplest way of describing it is : 'Hands go in, clubhead goes out'. You can start taking your hands deep straight away in the backswing, but keep the clubhead pointed outwards. I'm sure Erik or one of the guys will explain it better for you.
A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

Hands deep, not clubhead. I suggest you get a mirror when working on this. Put it right behind you and look at it while making backswings. Get to the point where it looks perfect and keep repeating it. It is very difficult to feel where the hands are and where the club is through the swing. Having someone else watch and correct you, or using a mirror will help a lot.

The hands start moving in right away, staying on plane through the backswing. There are lots of pictures and videos to look at for this, examples are to be found in the Deep Hands thread. Next time you record your swing, do it while hitting a ball. Our swing tends to change when we have are hitting a ball.

Clubhead doesn't pass the hands "depth wise" (from down the line) until after P2. If you're swiveling your hands and shoving the clubhead back inside or deep, not only are your hands not getting as deep as they should be but the clubhead's not on plane either.

    • It’s not live on free to air tv in the UK, and hasn’t been since 1995. ( I pay a subscription to Sky for generally good golf coverage). There are limited highlights on the BBC for some golf events, but that’s it. Are other/all PGA events on NBC?  Allowing ticket scalping is a systemic failure across sports and showbiz, which could be legislated against, but in the UK is not in any meaningful way. I don’t know much about the secondary market in the US or anti scalping measures.  Charging more to keep prices down is an interesting concept, in practice no doubt you are right even if It sounds a bit Catch 22  Do you think sports tickets and broadcast rights  should be sold on a purely capitalist basis, or is there an argument to say that some sports might benefit more from wider exposure and affordable access. ( golf in the US is apparently not one of these if tickets sold out at those prices so quickly)  Fans might benefit from cheaper tickets and in the UK at least, TV coverage that reaches a wider audience.
