Let me start out by saying, Im not a long hitter with most of my irons/wedges. My problem is hitting my wedges correctly. I hit my 50* and 54* the same distance, both about 75 yards. Now would you say im hitting my 54* to long or my 50* to short? Also how can i put some distance between the 2?

Thanks

Hey, I'm also a short hitter!

The wedges are only 4 degrees apart. What I find is that there is usually more distance in between clubs for golfers who are longer hitters. For instance, I hit about 100 yards with my PW 44*, 75 with my SW 56*, and about 65 with my 64*. It's quite a bit of distance between them, but the wedges are about 10-12 degrees apart, from each other.

So you should find that as you start shooting farther and farther, your distance between your clubs will increase.

Just out of curiosity, what do you hit with your 9I and PW?

I go 100 with my 54 degree and 75 with my 58 degree. Often times though I'm using the 54 degree from 75 yards with a 3/4 swing.

I would experiment with different ball positions. Moving the ball backward in your stance will take some loft off the shot and make it go further. It's not so much about hitting one club this distance and another club that distance, but rather what are my options from whatever distance you happen to be.

Maybe you "flip" the 54Β° a little bit to get the ball up in the air delofting the club. When I was shopping my Ping I10's one of the complaints was that the PW(46) and the UW(50) was too close in loft to warrant the UW. I guess ideally a wedge of set of 52/60 would be enough. 4Β° is normal between non wedge clubs, I personally use my 60Β° from about 75 yards on in, my SW (56Β°) which will hit 115 yards, but for pitching, I use it gripped down for shots 80-95 yards and my PW which full swing is 130ish, for any pitch 100-115 yards.

As far as your swing, now that is a different story.

My 50* is 110 yards on a full swing, my 54* goes 95-100, so about a 10-15 yard gap.

ibigler, in your signature, looks like your irons are Diablos which are SGI's, and the sole design is likely a whole lot more forgiving than your Vokeys (which are great wedges, but forgiveness isn't what they were built for). Esp with the low bounce you have in the 50 & 54*, you'd need to make pretty clean & consistent contact -- if you hit them a little fat, they may really dig on you guessing by your PW and 9i distances (my PW is ~125-130 yds and 9i is 140-145).

So you could experiment certainly with more forgiving wedges, or at least some with more bounce -- i changed out 2 of my prior low-bounce Cleveland 588 DSG's to CG14's with mid bounce, and am now a LOT more consistent (and confident) with my wedges.

practice homey

what hepled me was using my rangefinder and knowing how far each wedge ACTUALLY can go
get on the range, shoot out some distances and hit to them
and get used to hitting full, half, 3/4 and all kind of different shots
you will learn how to manipulate your swing and clubhead so that you can mke certain distances

im trying to go from a 3 wedge (52, 56, 60) set up to a 2 now (54, 58)

dont worry too much about how far you SHOULD be able to hit your clubs, compared to others
Philly Mac can hit his 62 or 64 over 80 yards...thats insane

practice, practice, practice

Wow, age 21 and 75 yards each. Something is going on. I am 68 and hit my 56* about 85-90 yds and my 50* 100-105 yds. It sounds like you are not doing a full swing, have the ball too far forward, not turning your hips, or getting the clubhead in front of your hands at impact. Look at your divots. Are they in front or behind the ball? A video would help.

I think it might be where i position the ball in my stance. at the range today, i played it closer to my back foot and got more distance on all my shots. im gonna try to get a video up soon.

That's because putting it further back in your stance delofts the club. What's more important is whether you were swinging both clubs consistently enough to differentiate their distances~

You may want to get your lefts checked. I noticed a yardage discrepancy immediately after I purchased my previous wedge set (CG12's). When I had them checked, the "50Β°" was 51Β° and the "54Β°" was 52.5Β°. My club fitter said that wedge tolerances are pretty good (usually +/- 0.5Β°), but more than that isn't uncommon.

    • My game, for a lot of reasons is finally starting to improve.  I darn near completed the no sixes challenge this morning. I snuck out early today and played my home course. I was the first one off and finished in under 2 hours.  I hit 8 fairways and was just off on 4 others. Only 2 tee balls were what I'd consider wild. (I made a GIR from the next fairway over on one of them. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ) I made 8 GIR's and had 8 NGIR's. I shot my lowest round since 2019 and didn't even putt particularly well. I had four or five really good birdie chances and didn't convert any. I also missed one well inside 3 feet on 13. That one hurt. Oops.  I played really well on Wednesday. Shooting a +1, 37 on the back nine. I birdied 2 of the last 4 holes. My approaches are where I'm seeing the biggest difference. I think the swing I've been working on for the past few months is starting to sink in. Here is Wednesday's strokes gained vs a 5 HCP. I'm excited to play tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing if this is this the start of a parade or just a lone drummer passing by?
    • 6700 treelined course (72 rating). It was a good yardage for my distance, not his. It was an official mid am competition. He finished 2nd with 4 under after 36 holes.
    • Played Sunday at my home course and shot an 83.....with four 3 putts.   So that is at least promising.   Played Men' Night last night (9 holes) and was Even after 7.....but then had a tough bogey and a terrible double to finish +3.   Either way.....I like the way things are trending.
