As I mentioned in another thread, the Canon SD550 has a 60-frames-per-second camera. Golf Digest uses cameras that shoot about 75 frames per second, so 60 is pretty good.

60 FPS at 320 x 240 isn't too bad, and since it's also a digital camera, it's great. Most DV (video) cameras only shoot standard 30 FPS. Odd that you'd go to a still camera for good slow-mo video capture, but you do. If you want some sample videos, two are here: http://erik.textdriven.com/dave_front.avi http://erik.textdriven.com/dave_line.avi

I haven't found any other threads on video equipment for the swing. I want to get something inexpensive to play back instantly on the range, and later take home to the PC. Does anyone have experience with these? I've heard good things about the Flip MinoHD. It seems 30 FPS would be ok -- that should be 3 or 4 frames through the downswing. Not enough? At least good enough for a quick look at the range? Thanks for any info/experience you can share.

I have been thinking about this also. My buddies that I play with don't know what to look for and can never see what they are looking for anyway. I need a camera too.

I haven't purchased it yet but have read many good reviews and seen sample videos. I'm waiting for the right price to show up on ebay. New in box they range from $80 to $180 on ebay.

Yeah, 30 FPS won't cut it. Get the Zi6.

I don't know about a good video camera that does this, but you might also want to consider looking at video editing software.

I have Pinnacle Studio and you can do everything you are thinking of in there. You can also pull out still shots, or add graphics (like lines) to movies. As well as being able to save them to several formats.

How much is this software and where did you get it?

Since you got on the subject of video cameras and software...

Does anyone use any Mac video editing programs for swing analysis? I'm a new Mac user and there are a few options out there. Specifically, I'm wondering if iMovie (around $60) has the capability to go slo-mo, pull out still images, add lines, etc... or do I need to upgrade to Final Cut ($200)?

Pinnacle Studio. Runs from $50 to $130 depending on the version. Can be gotten just about anywhere.

http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSit...Studio+Family/ My wife and daughter have done some pretty impressive stuff (imho) with it, including authoring and entire DVD. Menus, content, everything. The one downside is it is know to be a little buggy, but from the research I did all video editing software (unless your going for the really high end $1000+ stuff) is that way. Most of the reviews I researched said Pinnacle was the best in this price category. That was confirmed to us by a friend that works in video editing for a company.

QuickTime Player can do all that you want. I don't view anything in dedicated software. Heck, if I want to track the point of something in my swing, I put my cursor on it and/or watch the background, then use the arrow keys to step through frame by frame.

If you want to do a bit more like trim movies and things you may need to pay for QuickTime Pro (a long-standing ripoff that is going to be resolved/included in 10.6), but I almost never use Pro capabilities for viewing golf swing stuff.

It's kinda expensive, but also got a very good camera in it, for those looking for a very good camera that can also shoot high-speed video footage, look at the Casio EX-F1. I just bought it myself last week and absolutely love it. I'm a rookie when it comes to taking pictures, but the reviews give it thumbs up.

The cool thing about this camera is that it can shoot video.

60 FPS @ 1920x1080
30 FPS @ 1280x720
300 FPS @ 512x384
600 FPS @ 432x192
1200 FPS @ 336x96
30-300 FPS @ 512x384

With 300 FPS and above you can see every little detail in your swing. The 1200 FPS mode has got such a small resolution that the uses are very limited, but if you want you can record your impact with it, looking at clubface. You can also see the clubface clearly on 300 and above. 300 or 600 is perfect for recording a golf swing.

Due to winter I haven't been able to record much yet, but from what I've done so far I am very satisfied. I shot some indoors and immediately spotted my arms pushing away from my body at the downswing. Not much, but enough to put a spin on it form outside to inside.

As I said, it's an expensive camera, I found one on Pricegrabber at $999. You can find examples of videos on Youtube and the likes, search for "Casio EX-F1". Many of those have set up the camera poorly, so don't judge it all from those videos. Position against light and stuff like that makes a huge difference. On Youtube the resolution is also limited. A program is included which helps you put the video straight to Youtube.

This may be too expensive for those looking in this thread, but if someone else pops in and takes a look, here it is.

I didn't pick up the article when I searched the reviews. Eric's videos are impressive. I'm ordering an Ai6 from Amazon for $149.

$999 is not what I want to spend, but I'll tuck that info away. An artistic sort of professional photographer I know has also recommended Canon to me for stills.

Huge thank you! I was most familiar with the Flip, which costs more and only does 30 fps.

    • Nah, man. People have been testing clubs like this for decades at this point. Even 35 years. @M2R, are you AskGolfNut? If you're not, you seem to have fully bought into the cult or something. So many links to so many videos… Here's an issue, too: - A drop of 0.06 is a drop with a 90 MPH 7I having a ball speed of 117 and dropping it to 111.6, which is going to be nearly 15 yards, which is far more than what a "3% distance loss" indicates (and is even more than a 4.6% distance loss). - You're okay using a percentage with small numbers and saying "they're close" and "1.3 to 1.24 is only 4.6%," but then you excuse the massive 53% difference that going from 3% to 4.6% represents. That's a hell of an error! - That guy in the Elite video is swinging his 7I at 70 MPH. C'mon. My 5' tall daughter swings hers faster than that.
    • Yea but that is sort of my quandary, I sometimes see posts where people causally say this club is more forgiving, a little more forgiving, less forgiving, ad nauseum. But what the heck are they really quantifying? The proclamation of something as fact is not authoritative, even less so as I don't know what the basis for that statement is. For my entire golfing experience, I thought of forgiveness as how much distance front to back is lost hitting the face in non-optimal locations. Anything right or left is on me and delivery issues. But I also have to clarify that my experience is only with irons, I never got to the point of having any confidence or consistency with anything longer. I feel that is rather the point, as much as possible, to quantify the losses by trying to eliminate all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Or, I feel like we agree. Compared to the variables introduced by a golfer's delivery and the variables introduced by lie conditions, the losses from missing the optimal strike location might be so small as to almost be noise over a larger area than a pea.  In which case it seems that your objection is that the 0-3% area is being depicted as too large. Which I will address below. For statements that is absurd and true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. You will need to provide some objective data to back that up and also define what true 100% sweet spot is. If you mean the area where there are 0 losses, then yes. While true, I do not feel like a not practical or useful definition for what I would like to know. For strikes on irons away from the optimal location "in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?"   In my opinion it ok to be dubious but I feel like we need people attempting this sort of data driven investigation. Even if they are wrong in some things at least they are moving the discussion forward. And he has been changing the maps and the way data is interpreted along the way. So, he admits to some of the ideas he started with as being wrong. It is not like we all have not been in that situation 😄 And in any case to proceed forward I feel will require supporting or refuting data. To which as I stated above, I do not have any experience in drivers so I cannot comment on that. But I would like to comment on irons as far as these heat maps. In a video by Elite Performance Golf Studios - The TRUTH About Forgiveness! Game Improvement vs Blade vs Players Distance SLOW SWING SPEED! and going back to ~12:50 will show the reference data for the Pro 241. I can use that to check AskGolfNut's heat map for the Pro 241: a 16mm heel, 5mm low produced a loss of efficiency from 1.3 down to 1.24 or ~4.6%. Looking at AskGolfNut's heatmap it predicts a loss of 3%. Is that good or bad? I do not know but given the possible variations I am going to say it is ok. That location is very close to where the head map goes to 4%, these are very small numbers, and rounding could be playing some part. But for sure I am going to say it is not absurd. Looking at one data point is absurd, but I am not going to spend time on more because IME people who are interested will do their own research and those not interested cannot be persuaded by any amount of data. However, the overall conclusion that I got from that video was that between the three clubs there is a difference in distance forgiveness, but it is not very much. Without some robot testing or something similar the human element in the testing makes it difficult to say is it 1 yard, or 2, or 3?
