Question Regarding Irons and Putters

Why is it that the lettering on the back of irons is upright when the club is in the bag and upsidedown while in use, whereas the lettering on putters is the opposite?

The putters union and irons union want it that way*. Plus it looks good that way in photos - irons in the bag and the putter used for balance standing on the green (like Ben Hogan).

* Same reasoning the number pads on pocket calculators and telephones being reversed.

Also, when in the bag, the putter is usually under a headcover anyways.

How do you come up with stuff like this?
