Question...With the good 'ol "Iron Byron", the robot they test clubs with that repeats every swing EXACTLY...wouldn't it be easy to figure out which driver really gives us more distance?

It wouldn't be as easy as you think. Although you would be able to tell what driver gives the longest distance for the robot, it doesn't have a perfect swing. As a result, everyone would benefit from the combination of a different driver, loft and shaft combination. I don't have the same swingspeed as you and my swing is probably very different so the longest driver on the "robot" test could work perfectly for you but spray the ball all over the course for me.

The solution to finding the longest hitting driver is to get fit, then you'll find the best one for YOUR game.

no because its not just the driver head that gives EVERYONE the most distasnce.

Its a combination of driver head, shaft, and YOUR swing. Meaning, one person's best distance driver can be the next person's worst.

aka, the robot can test out 500 drivers and find the one best distance driver... which could very well be the worst distance driver for me, since I have a different swing than the robot.

Tests show that skilled golfers can sometimes hit a club better than Iron Byron - the golfer can make adjustments to stance and grip to correct for oddities of a given club.

As others have said, yes and no. Because distance is a result of clubhead speed, spin and tracjectory, different heads and shafts will yield different distances per player. It may be possible to estimate which head produces the most ball speed, all things being equal, but a players distance is largely a result of proper head and shaft selection.

It's a well known fact the universal longest hitting driver is... whichever one Tiger Woods has been paid to advertise this year.

Actually, the new TM will feature a telescoping shaft that allows you to adjust the shaft from 40" up to 60". ;)

Firstly, Tiger is not even long compared to the Bubbas and Justins and JBs hitting stupid drives recently. I think even Phil can consistently outdrive Tiger at this point. Secondly, even if Tiger can get all of it, it's likely nowhere near the fairway. So Tiger is not a advertising his Nike drivers very well as of late.

The only variable factor is the individuals swing. Head, shaft, ball and swing speed (e.g. 80,90,100,110) can all be isolated and tested, right? Possibly can include transition tempo to test shaft flex and kick points.

So, we could produce a series of data points for these items and get a fairly accurate idea of which driver is longest or is the swing that big a factor that it will throw doubt on the entire "study"?

    • I generally like par-3 courses and find it a darn shame that the last of them closed in my area during the pandemic. Part of it may have to do with the fact that I never have been very good with the longer clubs, so the short holes are a bit more my speed.  Being able to get in 18 holes in two hours was pretty convenient and, ironically, the lack of crowds made them peaceful places to be. Naturally, that's the same reason they no longer exist around here.  The second option sounds like a whole lot of no fun.
