I'm in an interesting situation when it comes to the distances on my irons. I'm only 5'6, but I hit my short irons quite far (PW - 140 ; 9I - 152 ; 8I - 165), but as I get into my longer irons, I get progressively shorter, even with well-struck shots. I hit my 6 and 7 Irons just about the exact same distance (175), and my longer irons don't supply the needed distance (5I - 183 ; 4I - 188 ; 3I - 195). I was just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this issue before, and if there is a way to give some stability to my distance gaps.

Thanks.

How is your ball flight on all your clubs?

I'd imagine you're delofting your shorter irons pretty substantially, so instead of a high, soft landing, you're coming in a bit hotter and rolling?

Interesting you should say this, because I hit my short irons with Stratospheric height. I play all of my irons forward in my stance, and still hit high with my longer clubs, but evert time I tee it up, I get comments on how ungodly high my 120-160 yard shots go. As you can imagine, they're quite effected by the wind, but every time I try to move the ball back in my stance, I hit horrible hooks on a consistent basis.

have you gotten your clubs fitted?
could be something to do with the clubs.

maybe you just strike the shorter irons better.

Were the clubs fitted for you? You might want to try stiffer shafted irons so your shorter irons don't balloon as much and the distance disparity might be more even with them. Take a video of your shorter irons versus your longer irons and post em up for everyone to see. I'm sure that will help in finding the problem.

First off, get your loft/lies checked out to make sure they are accurate. I have rarely seen clubs off the rack that were perfect. Then make sure you are playing the correct shaft. Once you have that done and if you are still having a problem you may want to adjust a couple of your lofts to get you some more spacing in your long irons. The modern lofts tend to start the wedge out stronger and then put the lofts closer together in the mid and long irons. I make sure that all my lofts are 4 degrees apart 4-P and then 3 degrees between the 3 and 4. This spacing has worked for me for over 20 years. Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, unless you are making great contact with sufficient clubhead speed you are better off with 4 or 5 degrees to minimize gaps in the longer irons and even ditching one in the process.

I found the CG7 Tour Specs on the Cleveland site.

PW46.00°64.50°35.50"D3.085"

As far as hitting it high it could be for many reasons such as shaft, technique, ball position, etc. Hard to say without seeing you play.

    • Did you look up any Rules before posting here? What did you learn or find? You don't get to drop (or place) closer to the hole. 16.1(c) deals with relief for Abnormal Course Conditions in bunkers. You're granted free relief for: Since you say the bunker was basically entirely full of water, you likely wouldn't get complete relief, so for free (no penalty strokes), you are entitled to "maximum available" relief. If there's a spot in the back of the bunker away from the hole where the water is the shallowest, then you can drop there. If you don't like any of those options, you can take a penalty stroke and drop out of the bunker, behind it: You seem to have played from a wrong place (nearer to the hole) and thus likely should be penalized two strokes. It doesn't sound like a serious breach, at least.
    • I feel that the stock grips on my Wilson D9's are a little thin.  The grips on my other clubs (purchased used online and sold by me a couple months ago) were Golf Pride and they looked like the wrapped version.  I will say they felt like they had a little more cushion.  I don't have particularly large hands.  Did the grips on my other clubs have more tape or was just a better feeling softer grip?  I have no idea.  Well, any brands you would recommend that have a softer feel?
    • So this situation happened. A bunker in front of the green was full of water. My ball was underwater in the very back of the bunker furthest from the green. There was a small patch on the front upslope of the bunker nearest the green that theoretically could have been used to hit from if the ball was placed.  A drop would just roll back into the water. And this was the only part of the bunker you might be able to get a stance without standing in water. So my question is do you hit from that small front slope even though you would have to move the ball 6-7 closer to the pin? Or do you drop outside the bunker making sure you are no closer to the pin? I dropped in front of the bunker, so I had to chip over the whole bunker. Was this the right call? Also could I have moved it latterly outside the bunker, although this wouldn’t have made much difference as my ball was pretty much as far back in the bunker as you could be away from the hole.
    • I just got my shotscope v5 watch and used it yesterday. Its fairly accurate at the course I was playing so I did not use my rangefinder at all. I was able to calculate what club i needed from that.
