My apologies if there's already a thread about this but I couldn't find one through a search.

I'm wanting to get my dad a new iron set for his birthday, preferably used/outlet/etc, so I don't mind if a set is a few years old. He's 67 and not really proficient at the game, he just likes getting out on the course with me and a couple of my buddies. I'd say he hits his driver around 230ish when he catches it good and would probably shoot 110-120 if he truly kept score. He got a deal on a senior flex driver/wood/hybrid set at a local store but iron wise he's still using an old set of mine that's stiff flex with not a lot of offset.

Anyways, I was looking at the Adams O3 OS irons at rockbottomgolf for 199, but I thought I'd check on here and see if anyone had any suggestions. It probably wouldn't hurt if a set had 4-5 or even 6 hybrids.

Thanks in advance for any responses, I appreciate it!

There are many, many good choices and probably with quality mfgs, few bad ones, so saying one is best is just talk.

So, I'll talk! If I was looking for a super game improvement set tomorrow, I would look very closely at the Callaway X-22's. With the right shaft I think they would be very easy to hit. Since the X-24's are out and its the end of the year, you might be able to find a deal on a new set, or a used set since they have been out a while now.

... He's 67 and not

I turn 60 next week, so your e-mail struck a chord with me.

How big is your father, and how physically fit is he? Does he have any limitations due to past work or sports injuries? I got rid of stiff shafts last year, and have a better swing tempo because I'm not fighting the shaft. Teaching pros say most men should reconsider stiff shafts by mid-50s. I'd say the R or senior shafts in the irons might help out. Senior-flrx woods and stiff irons is an odd mix for good swing tempo. Also, don't automatically go hyper on hybrids. A friend your dad's age recently got new senior golf set, and doesn't like the shorter (midrange?) hybrids. Said he'd prefer to have 5i and 6i. Then again, social golfers don't worry about gear too much. My wife has clubs from 1989 - early cavity-back irons OK, but woods are tiny heads, have steel shafts. Have been trying to sell her on idea that 21st Century tech might help things.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Callaway Big Berthas from the Callaway Preowned site. I played these irons for 10 years. Very forgiving. Many sets to choose from, 1994-2008. Not much difference over the years if you ask me. $200-300 would get a great set of clubs. Reg or Senior flex graphite would be my suggestion.

Here is one such example, 2006 Big Berthas, senior flex graphite...

There are a couple of older folks at my work and they recently picked up Nike Machspeed SQ irons and they love them. One of them had been playing Ping Eye 2s and the other Titleist CBs.

This. I played BB 2006 recently, and they were very forgiving. Not the right club for me right now, but with regular or senior flex graphite shafts, any of the recent Big Berthas should be great for a senior golfer looking for easy clubs to hit.

Also, consider graphite shafts to compensate for a slower swing.

RockBottom has a set of Nike full cavity reg. flex graphite's for 329, which is a decent deal.
