Alright, I'm biting the bullet and posting 4 videos of my swing.

A little background info:

Didn't pick up a club until I was 23, and this summer was my first season getting serious about the game. I've also never had any lesson of any kind. I feel like I have reached a ceiling with my home grown approach, and I'm ready for an educated critique, which is where (some of) you come in.

I'm working on getting my clubface square at impact. My typical misses are right, and I definitely fight a slice with the driver, but I can generally keep the ball in play, and tone it down to a fade. I'm not a huge hitter, and when the weather is warm, I hit my driver about 240, Hybrid 190-200, 7 iron about 135-140, 9 iron about 110.

This is the first time I've ever looked at my own swing, and here are the things that I noticed:

My right foot is not square, my head moves a lot, and my posture is hunched over, but I already had suspicions of these.

On with the videos!

There are some good things going on with your swing. For the most part I like your set-up. I think your biggest issue is your turn away from the ball in the backswing. Your hands and the club barely start to move backwards and you have already completed your hip turn and strangely have staightened both your legs. So basically you are out of sequence in your backswing. Instead, start the club back first with your upper body (shoulders turning your arms) keeping your lower body still until the clubhead starts to leave the ground. Then let your hips turn naturally to accommodate your shoulder turn (don't consciously try to turn them or resist turning them). Your first move in the downswing should be your hips turning back towards the target (or sliding, just make sure the first move is from your lower body moving towards the target). Hopefully this should get you moving in the right direction. Fundamentally there isn't a whole lot wrong with your swing. Resolving this one issue should take you a long way.

It's funny you mentioned that about the hips...I posted a

thread asking that very question. And this is very apparent in my swing, I feel like it looks really armsy/lot of shoulder turn but not quite the most aggressive swing. I have pretty messed up knees, too, if that matters (both hyperextend and one has a previously torn meniscus).

Setup: Hands out of sync. Left hand looks fine, but your right hand looks too strong (V pointed past your right shoulder) Your left "v" is pointing at your right shoulder. Grip the club so both "v" are pointing in the same direction (hands will be in better sync)

backswing: Agree with keep it simple. you need more hip turn and more shoulder turn. Try bending your left knee during the backswing and feel like your right hip turns behind you and up. Try to get your belly button to face the camera on the DTL view. Also, try to keep your left arm straighter (it bends a lot at the top of the backswing)

Forwardswing: need more extension of back, arms and legs into impact and follow through. You extend going into impact, then just before impact and into follow through, you start to lose that extension.

So, I've been working on keeping my left knee flexed during my backswing, and initiating my hip turn with a slight push from my right foot. This has given me a few extra yards, but this will take a while to be a consistent change in my swing.

    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
    • I’ve recently started KBs too and really enjoy it. I have one day of armour building complex and one day of a mobility routine. Adding in a speed training day too.    which routines do you do @Elmer
