I am working on figuring out which driver I need (loft, lie, shaft., length, etc...) that will work with my recent swing change...I am doing my version of the stack and tilt...my coach calls it a left axis swing as I basically rotate around my head (keeping it still...for the most part) and my weight stays on my left side through out the entire swing...I am getting excellent results with my irons all the way to my 3 wood but when I try to hit drivers I get mixed results...I assume because I am approaching the ball with a decending blow. I did own a driver that was 44.5in, 9.5 deg with a 85 gram X flex shaft before my swing change but when I decided to commit to this swing every time I hit this driver it would go straight as an arrow but I could not get the ball very high and my distance seriously suffered from lack of carry...so I have been testing some 10.5 deg drivers with stiff shafts and the ball flight looks better but I don't like the feel of a lighter shaft (especially at 44.5 inches which I loose a couple of swing weights)...do you think it would make sense for me to go to heavier shaft or is this swing just not going to work and I need to do something different when hitting a driver???

first off whats your swing speed
do you know what your launch angle is ball spin rate

need to find a place where theres a launch monitor and they can help you get fitted for a driver

Since you are doing stack and tilt (or your version of it) check out this video from the guys at Golf Evolution...

This helped me out so much... for the first time since I started golfing (nearly 10 years) I feel comfortable with a driver in my hands.

Have you tried the move in the video where he moves his hip slightly forward when addressing the ball (be careful not to shift your shoulders or head forward)? Tilting the spine away from your target will reduce the amount you're hitting down on the ball meaning you launch the ball higher without adding more backspin (that you would get from hitting down with a club with more loft). Other than the small hip movement you should pretty much be able to execute your normal swing.

First, I would ask your coach if you are hitting the driver correctly. Next, if you like your set-up, you have to realize that an 85 gram X shaft probably has a really high kick point and that maybe a different version of the shaft (mid kicker) may work better for you. You could try that and hope that you guess right (spin rate, etc) or you could go get on a launch monitor and try some stuff at the local shop. I probably wouldn't do anything until consulting with the swing guy, since it sounds like this is going to be permanent.

Hard to answer based on limited info, but I hope it gives you something to think about.

Im just commenting so I can follow this too. I finally got S&T ingrained with my driver and I was hitting low straight rockets. I wanna keep things the same and just get 10.5 or even 11.5*
I guess the answer is to get fitted. My problem is I dont want to be fittted and have someone tell me the right driver is a new ping m25 ($250)with a $300 shaft. I won't do it. I wont spend more than $125-$150 on a driver. I dont think I have to.

    • Day 11, 1/11/26.  Today was putting, along about 6' of carpet, with coins on the ground to keep me cognizant of what I'm doing.  I think this is the at-home drill from LSW. (Ugh, missed two of the last four days -- 1/10 and 1/8)
    • Day 9: 2026.01.11 Hit some balls at the range, concentrating on weight distribution at address, got some on film.
    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
