Carry distance between irons and hybrids?

All,

I have a 6 iron (Callaway FT I-brid) which has a 28 degree loft. I avg 160 yards with this club.

I just bought 5 hybrid (Callaway FT-IZ) that is 27 degree loft. In Dicks on the simulator I was hitting this club around 175 yards.

Anyone noticed they can hit a hybrid longer than an iron with similar loft?

I definitely hit my hybrid further than my irons with similar loft on average. I think the combination of being easier to hit, and increased weight is the cause of the difference.

Simple physics.


Hybrids have a much higher MOI due to having more weight behind the face. And assuming your swinging the 2 clubs at the same speed, more weight=more momentum=further ball. Also when you it off center that's when you'll really see a difference in distance between your iron and hybrid.

The combination of more weight behind the face and typically longer shafts between a hybrid and its iron counterpart is the reason you're seeing more distance in the hybrid.

I honestly don't see a difference, it fits in my distence gap. But I ballon my hybrid a tad, thats probs why haha

I thought it was the higher COR and lower COG that made the ball go farther and higher. Oh well.

Yes, and there is a larger distance gap between the hybrids than there is between my irons.

AFAIK, most of the time, hybrids have longer (and sometimes lighter) shafts than their same-loft-iron-counterpart.
Usually that's the reason, why they are longer...

There is one caveat, better players because they make more consistent contact and do a better job of swinging through the shot do not see as big a difference as less accomplished golfers.

This is somewhat true but there are some cases depending on the setup of the hybrid where you can squeeze a bit more distance out of a hybrid. That said, low cappers and pros may choose one or the other depending on the ball flight vs. distance.

Personally, I really like my 23 deg Mizuno hybrid (steel shaft) because it flys a bit higer than my 4i which enables me to hold greens off of the fairway. The same applys for the long par 3s ie., 240 yards, where I can get it up in the air and hold the green much easier. Then again, on a windy day, my 4i will travel further into the wind than the hybrid. So it really all depends...
