the captain will have no effect on the US team as long as the format of play stays the same. The US will lose any and all "partner format" play. The comment Azinger made about Tiger is correct. Thats why Tiger is the best player in the world. He plays to win ...unfourtunatley ...winning on the PGA Tour, Majors, and world tour is an individual quest. Azinger is as good as anyone....he will lose as well as anyone else.

Nobody told Phil he had to be a professional athlete either. That kind of stuff just comes with the territory. It's like that in every sport. And I can't imagine someone not wanting to play for their country in either The Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup. That sends a chill down my spine just thinking about it. I'd have an entire different level of dislike for Phil if that was the case.

Amen brotha'! He doesn't have to play. Most athletes don't remember that pro sports are ENTERTAINMENT (see what ESPN stands for). Without the fans being entertained, it wouldn't exist.

It's also true that Phil was decent during his Ryder Cups up until the last two or so (as you pointed out above), so I wonder what the problem recently is? I'll bet it's the age. I watched "Tin Cup" on TV the other day and saw a young Phil walking around with Kevin Costner. Made me realize he's been around a while. Not saying you can't play well when older, but maybe that "zeal for king and country" isn't with him anymore. Maybe he's looking to bow out gracefully by playing less. Who knows.

    • Hopefully this one is better
    • Patrick Cantlay's strokes gained from 2024: I wonder if he takes more time on approach shots given that was the worst part of his game last season. And then here are his 2023 stats: Much better ball striking season. I wonder if there are any differences in his times between these two seasons. I tend to think he's just slow in general, but it'd be interesting to see his time differences.
    • Not sure, I think players have their own pace. Speith was always slow, regardless if he was in contention or not. Well, more so when he was in contention. It might be a push there on that question.
    • Without knowing the study at all, this could be more of a reflection of who is tournament ready and who isn't. If you have a quick trigger, it could mean your swing is working really well. Fidgeting, lots of rehearsals, maybe means your swing's not functioning as well as you'd like it to and you need more time to feel it all out before you hit your shot.
    • A study done by the European Tour shows spending less time over the ball produces better shots.  This makes sense. I can see where if you are over the ball a long time you lose the ability to make a more athletic swing. There is also the possibility of just overthinking the shot while over the wall as well and not being in the right headspace.
