Can someone clarify what's the difference?

I'm a fan of the hinge and hold method with chipping, etc and I was thinking what if I try it on a full swing? Is this basically the same as the flying wedge? like maintaining wrist cock throughout the downswing? (I find I instinctly release it before impact anyhow).

Pretty much the same thing. For a righty, the right wrist folds back (knucles to forearm) left wrist hinges. Thus, into impact, left wrist is flat

A few loosely related thoughts:
  • The left wrist cocks and the right wrist folds. Small point, but be careful of the terms - "maintain wrist cock" is not the same as retaining the flying wedge.
  • I'm not a fan of hinge and hold on most shots. For chips it makes sense, but I "chip" about 5-10% of the time. The rest of the time I "pitch."
  • Hinge and hold is exactly what you want to feel on full swings. No flipping, no need to roll the clubface. Practicing chipping is a great way to work that feeling into your full swing. Gradually work up.

Awesome cheers guys.

Yeah, I've been working on the hinge and hold feel with punch shots and when it works the ball really goes. Implementing it on the full swing is much harder for some reason.

Everything is more difficult with a longer and faster swing. I have the same issues as you. Punch shots both feel and look a lot better than the full swings.

Just keep practicing by switching back and forth between hinge and hold chipping, punch shots and full shots. Try to get the same feelings into the full shot.

I was actually watching the Phil Mickelson Short Game DVD last night and it clicked that the hinge and hold seemed an awful lot like the flying wedge. So I immediately went to google and searched "Is Hinge and Hold the Same as the Flying Wedge" and I got this thread at the top of my search results...

I think what I have found is that my flip is not as much a bad habit as it is necessity because of my arms swing and improper rotation. I mean as fast as I swing my arms there is not a chance in hell of anyone being able to hold off a flip.

Here is what is working for me:

1.Mickelson chips of course

2. A full swing but feeling like it is in super slow motion compared to my normal arms swing, The ball is actually going just as far if not farther using this passive arms and shoulder turn.

Here is my question that I just can't seem to grasp.m I hear the term "accelerate" through the ball, well what actually accelerates on the downswing? Is it my cupped rear wrist, my flat front wrist, my shoulders, ???

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn. • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
