Box store = ??

Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy, Dick's, PGA Superstore etc., etc.

I would say the above stores are specialty retailers than true "big box" stores.

Havoc implies that you can only get decent clubfittings at custom shops. I disagree. The Golf Galaxy shops I frequent, and a Dick's golf section I visited, had trained clubfitters on staff who know their stuff.

Big golf shops are no more specialty shops than Walmart. Unless a person has been fit in a big box store (or golf shop if you prefer) and by a certified clubfitter, there is really no way for one to tell the difference. My experience in golf shops has me of the opinion that the "fittings" they do are jokes most the time. A real fitting will take hours of 1:1 time and you will make an appointment to do so. For example, if I lived in St Louis, below are the folks I would be in contact with...

Box store = ??

Some chain stores have fitters who know their stuff, others don't. Two of the GG guys have gone through Maltby's fitting and clubsmithing schools, and have their certifications. Also, I read up on club design quite a bit - trying to sort out the marketing BS from true advances - and these guys know the ins and outs of what works.

If the GolfTec guy can discourage you from talking to other fitters, it's more money in his pocket. That said, if you have a 4.6 HDCP GolfTec guy must be helping you.

Also, Golf Galaxy is more of a specialty retailer than a box store - you need to check out your marketing terminology. "Box Store" is an handy slur for custom botiques to hand on less pricy operations.

Golf Galaxy, Martins Golf & Tennis, Golfsmith, etc.. are all called "box stores" by golfers. The fact that you have a different opinion is fine of course, but that doesn't change what many folks call the stores. Generally speaking, most the fitting and such is a joke. I have talked to countless people that got fit in a box store... ha ha.. and had a poor fitting. Problem is, most folks don't know the difference. I have had a few golf shop fittings and one professional fitting. The difference is day and night. Apples and oranges. I love walking around in the bigger golf shops. I just don't listen to what the sales people say or rely on them for my fitting. I am far more particular about that aspect of my game. Pick out a clubfitter with the same mindset you would select an instructor to work with. That is my suggestion at any rate.

    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
    • Day 1 - 2025-12-20 Starting a new streak, of at least 1. With rain dumping for the next week in the north bay area, I'll be a lot of outdoor net work and maybe some putting. About 10 minutes of 7 iron work, focused on the usuals: weight transfer, keeping hands behind me. I'll have more time in the coming days for video review and maybe some Hack Motion.
    • Day 40 (20 Dec 25) - got in a few reps with the 55° wedge - focused on low flighted spinners from about 10 yds in, then wrapped up the session with a few bump and runs chips with the 5i using a putting type stroke.
    • Day 26: did my drill in the driveway for a bit. Feeling pretty decent about the change.
