Caught some great weather in RI today, so I played 36 holes at Triggs Memorial in Providence. For 27 of those holes I was joined by two guys from Springfield, MA, who were great company. I shot 43-44 (87) and 42-42 (84) from winter tees.

The first few holes, my swing didn't feel good at all. I was keeping it in play, but hitting some skanky pull-cuts. I was thinking to myself, why does this happen when I was drawing the ball at the range yesterday? It took me a few holes to figure it out, but I realized I was not coiling my body at all--I was just hitting with my arms. Once I started turning my hips, I started hitting the ball straighter and about 30 yards longer off the tee. Was probably one of the better driving days I have had at Triggs.

My irons were not real crisp (a touch thin all day) but my direction was pretty good. Chipping and pitching were OK, and putting was lousy. My lag putting was not bad, but I missed alot of 4-5 footers. I need to develop some confidence and consistency with my putting stroke. Unfortunately, I find putting practice to be incredibly boring.

So what did I learn today? 1) Guys from Springfield, MA are pretty cool 2) Turn the hips 3) I am a really bad putter

Nice to hear you were able to get out there. Sounds like you had a great time (most important to enjoy your time on the course) and figured some things out.

Do you know if there are any courses open in northern RI or MA near norther RI?

Thanks for the comment uttexas. It was a gorgeous day, and nice to be on the course.

jamo, I don't know about courses in N. RI. I overheard someone at the driving range say that Stone-E-Lea in Attleboro, MA was open. Would call before going though.

Thanks. Maybe I'll look into the Triggs memorial you went to. Providence is only 45 min away.

jamo Triggs is a great Donald Ross course, and I definitely recommend playing it at some point. It is $20 for 18 holes right now (although I played 36 with no problem).

Sounds like you had a nice time. I wouldn't worry too much about the putting right now. When the greens aren't growing they don't roll well.
