Took most of the afternoon off today and played 9 holes with a friend at Marovitz. The course was probably the best shape I've ever seen it, but the greens were bumpy and slow. Recap:

Hole 1 394yd Par 4: Hit 4h off the tee to the right side of the fairway, 200 yards out. Topped my second shot into the right rough and then used a 9i from about 140. I hit it on target, but a little thick so I ended up just short of the green. I chipped on to about 6 feet away. I thought I had an easy putt for a 5, but I watched the ball bounce around and not break at all like I thought it would so then I had another 6 footer and made that for a 6.

Hole 2 465yd Par 5: Brought the big dog out as the hole is a dogleg right and pretty safe to miss right. I ended up striping it right down the middle and was left with about 240 left. I used a 5h and tried to play for position as the fairway narrows at the green and comes in left to right. Instead I pushed the shot right and was left with a 50 yd shot from the rough over a bunker. I then basically shanked it right to under some low trees and still had the bunker in front of me. I used a de-lofted 9i and pretty much tried to plow it into the hill above the bunker hoping it would hop up onto the green. The strategy worked in so far as I avoided the bunker but I didn't get onto the green. I chipped on and somehow pulled my chip and had 15 feet left for a 6. I almost drained it but had to come back for a 7.

Hole 3 177yd Par 3: The tee was up a bit and the pin was at the front so I used a 6i. I thought I hit a really good shot but I pushed it slightly and ended up pin high on the grass between the bunker and the green. My chip was a little strong and the ball rolled all the way to the long grass on the far side. I decided to putt and it was at the hole but about 6 feet short. I missed the putt and ended up with a 5. So, 3 double bogeys in a row to start.

Hole 4 434yd Par 4: I hit another great drive but I pushed it slightly and was in the rough on the right side of the fairway. I was still a little over 200 yards out and I had some trees slightly in the way so I tried a knock down shot with my 4h. I made great contact with the ball but got it a little too airborne and clipped some branches so I was left with about 95 yards in the right rough. I used my 52 degree wedge with a 90% swing and left the ball 2feet from the hole. Shot of the day. Of course I made the putt this time for par.

Hole 5 515yd Par 5. Pushed my drive to the right and got hung up in some trees about 300 yards from the hole with a pretty poor lie. Used a 5h looking to advance the ball and get on the fairway. I did that ok but not as much forward progress as I hoped for. So, at just under 200 yards out I used a 5h but I severely pushed it right and was left with probably a 40 foot shot from the right over some bunkers. The chip was actually pretty good, I got it up in the air and landed it on the green, but it was about 1 yard too far. On the far side there is a steep slop and I rolled right down it. I chipped on, but then 3-putted for an 8.

Hole 6 140yd Par 3. Had to wait a bit to tee off and then I was anxious so I rushed my shot and didn't make good contact. I made it over the water but short of the green. I chipped on to about 8 feet away. I then missed the par putt and had to settle for a 4.

Hole 7 422yd Par 4: I hit a really straight drive right down the middle and was left with about 195. I used 5h but once again pushed it to the right and ended up pin high but in the bunker. I got out of the bunker but left it short of the green. Had a poor chip and was left with 12 feet. I made the putt - best putt of the day - for a 5.

Hole 8 322yd Par 4. Let's not discuss this hole. There was nothing good about this hole and I took a snowman.

Hole 9 371yd Par 4. I used 4h off the tee as the fairway is narrow and protected by traps. Unfortunately I still pushed the shot right and was in the right rough with about 175 to the hole. I used a 6i but hit it fat for the first time and didn't get very far. With 120 left I used my pitching wedge but once again pushed it right and long and trickled off the back right of the green. I chipped on and 2 putted for a 6.

Overall:

Score: 53. I was disappointed, I thought I could do better than that.

Driver: Best day driving in a while. I was making good contact with the driver and they were much straighter than usual. I'm still going to be really cautious about using that club.

Ball Striking: Felt like I was making good contact all day with a few exceptions, but I pushed a lot of shots right. Not sure whats up with that.

Chipping: Needs work. I really didn't have one chip I felt great about.

Putting: Feeling way more confident with the putter these days. I only had 17 putts and felt like I left a at least three putts out there.

Next up: ?? Not sure. I may try to sneak in 9 holes this weekend but I may not get to play again until the 23rd.

    • Day 576 - 2026-04-30 Put my playlist on and slowed down a little as things were meh. Mostly got to an exaggerated P6 and hit from there.
    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
    • I had two events the past two days. Yesterday I was playing a course blind. Hit it solid. Hit 9/14 fairways, 12/18 greens, 34 putts. Many of those putts were the result of balls that were close-ish to the hole when they landed, but wound up a long way away once they'd finished rolling (backwards mainly). Then today, hit 11/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 37 putts, and shot 80. 8 over par and it wasn't particularly pretty. My big problem today was my pitching. I was inside 100 yards of the hole and off the green on 9 occasions.  1st - drive to about 75 yards, fanned a 58 degree short and right. On the green, but a good 40 feet away and good two putt from there (so took 3) 2nd - laid up to a bunker and it's narrow past it, so had 165 in, missed it right with an 8 iron. Wet rough, chip from about 5 yards off the green and the club snagged. It got on the green, but only temporarily. Overcorrected a bit on the next one and hit it a bit firm and it rolled out to about 35 feet. Putt didn't break and it ran on a bit and I missed the one back (greens were fast and a little bumpy, which didn't help, but doesn't excuse either). (took 5 to get down from close to the green) 4th - had about 95 from the right rough, hit it on the green and two putts (3) 5th - 90 from the fairway, tugged it and it got a firm bounce, chipped on and hit what I thought was a decent chip, but it ran out down the hill and two putts from 20 feet (4) 7th - 65 from the fairway, significant upslope and hit it a bit hard, ran long left against the collar. Tried to blade a PW, but it got under a bit so didn't advance it anything like far enough. Made a good two putt from there (4) 11th - 63 from the fairway, hit a squirrelly pitch on the green and two putts (3) 12th - 75 from the semi-rough, caught it a bit clean and it wound up on the back edge. Putting down a tier and it ran 8 feet past (that was actually a really good putt and couldn't have done any better I don't think) and missed that (4) 13th - 55 from the fairway, overcorrected and hit the big ball before the small ball. Then made a stellar up and down from 25 yards short to an elevated green with a putter (3) 15th - down in three from a greenside bunker (3) That was it. The other 9 holes I hit it on the green from outside 100 yards. So on those 9 occasions, I took 32 shots to get in the hole. 3.56 average. Terrible. Reason I'm posting this in here is to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to work on my contact with pitch shots. I don't have access to a grass range. Only mats and it's easy off a mat. Partly I think my problem is I've hit it off mats so much this winter that I've lost my judgement on where the ball is versus the ground because of the leeway granted. Open to ideas. I also suspect that under pressure I stand a bit closer to it and then get steep and hit down on it and it puts me in a bad place, but I can't seem to get myself to not do that.
