Or we just don't agree.  Your questions/points about rules officials are basically incorrect: they have a well-defined, specific job, and when the players employ them, they're useful.  True, the rules of golf don't contemplate HDTV or instant replay, but they also don't mention banana peels (until the decisions), which were equally rare on the old Links where the rules were developed.  The game adapts.  The rules *do* expect the players and committees to use all available information to make the right call, and that's what's being done.

My comments didn't warrant his kneejerk response, especially after being shredded. The post makes sense, if someone wants it to. If you think I said all the things that makes your reponse make sense, then for you, my post didn't make sense.

The facts of the matter remain:

  1. Padraig knew his ball had "moved" in some way, whether it oscillated or not, and he could have availed himself of a Rules Official and not only avoided the DQ, but the two stroke penalty as well.
  2. His ball definitely moved, and it didn't just oscillate.
  3. Players are responsible for knowing the rules and applying them. Rules officials are responsible for helping the players. They will stop a rules infraction when possible, but in the end, they're a resource and the players are given the responsibility to regulate themselves. It's one of the things that sets golf apart.
  4. Once again, the player who is DQed admits fault and does not get on a soapbox about how enforcing the Rules of Golf is destroying the game of golf.

Yes, it sucksy for Paddy, but the facts don't change depending on who sees them.

Also, to those who want to call anyone who cares about the game of golf names, act like an adult, please. Whomever may have called, emailed, tweeted, or whatever is most certainly not some of the things he or she has been called.
