I will be in Hilton Head in mid February. I haven't been there since I was a child. I will have time to play two days. I am looking for help deciding WHERE to play.

1. On the first day I would like the quintessential Hilton Head golf experience. The choices are endless. There are so many courses with huge names attached, I would like to hear from people who have played the island often.

2. On the second day I would like to play somewhere that would let me off the tee FIRST - as a single, or pair me with someone who knows the course well, plays fast, and plays very early in the morning. I would love to watch the sun rise as I tee off of 1.

I'm hoping for some warm weather!  So sick of the snow.

I like the Robert Trent Jones course at Palmetto dunes.  Surprisingly, it's the only course besides Harbour Town with a hole with an ocean view (10th hole).  Starts off pretty forgiving, then gets progressively tougher.  LOTS of water, especially the back 9.

Driver: Cleveland Classic 270, 10.5*
Fairway Woods: Adams Speedline LP (3 & 5)

Wedges: Cleveland CG15 DSG 52* & 58* +/- 56* Niblick

Putter: Yes! Amy

"the quintessential Hilton Head golf experience" would have to be Harbour Town, but it's pricey. drglew has it right with the Robert Trent Jones course at Palmetto dunes. I personally don't care for the Ocean course at Sea Pines. It has a few nice holes but was never my favorite. Look into Golden Bear and Country Club of Hilton Head. Just off island is Crescent Point and Eagle's Point.

Harbor Town would be my first choice and yes, it is expensive any time of the year! I like Golden Bear enough but my new second favorite course in the Hilton Head area is Hampton Hall which is a great Pete Dye course. Usually you won't have a problem going out as a single regardless of your tee time. Have fun wherever you go!

  • 2 weeks later...

You HAVE to get the Harbour Town experience. My parents own a property in Hampton Hall in Bluffton (20 mins from HH), and they have an EXTREMELY nice golf course. It's semi-private, so they'll let you play. Look out for BOGO coupons on one of HH's golf course guides.

I love Hampton Hall. It's great. I think the Dafuski courses are fantastic. Hilton Head National is a Player design that is excellent. I would recommend any these courses for you. I like the Mellow Mushroom for pizza and Stacks for breakfast. Have fun.

THANKS everyone - for the replies. I played Harbour Town and the Ocean Course. I shot 82 from the back tees at HT - I was 9 over after 9 holes, and shot 37 on the back.

The Ocean Course was easier. I shot 78.

Glad to hear others have played hampton hall. Shot an 84 the last time I played there, first time playing there. I wish I lived down there, I'd have to become a golf pro! Haha...I wanted to play HH national and Harbour town, but I was with the wife, so I would've been in the doghouse the rest of the trip.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
