anyone have a few tips on how to get the grips to line up perfectly straight to the club face? Specifially, the logo and 2 alignment dashes at the beggining and end of the grip. Not so much as installing them, but how to find the exact center of the shaft to determine that the clubface will be dead square.

Personally, I line the grips up with logos and dashes down and align the clubface by using...the clubface. I have installed some with logo up and just used the eye to line it up, if some feels wrong I can adjust them later on. That's the good thing about not having alignment on the grip, if there is no alignment, there is nothing that can be wrong. If you haven't removed the old grips I'd recommend marking the position with a marker before removing it.

The whole problem is i had them lengthened, and new grips put on. The "pro" must have been crosseyed, because they are no where near centered. In fact the word "golf pride" actuallly finishes about 1/2" left of where it starts. If i allow the head of the iron to hang down naturally if i support the shaft, and go by the word "forged" on the back, will that get me close?

I would just takeit back to the shop, but its a 45 mile each way drive, and he gave me a hard time, saying that i was probably messing with them. My bank did get my money back though, after I showed them the poor workmanship.

another thought i had was to put the club in a bench vise, and hang a plumb bob from the ceiling and line the grooves up with it, then using a measuring tape, finding the exact center of the shaft when the grooves are verticle. making a mark, then lining up the grip with the mark.. sound like that will be pretty precise?

I am sure there are a number of ways...I use a straight line on the ground, a tile, or a board on a wood floor for reference.  I try to line the first groove parallel to that line /crack /reference.  I then sight down the shaft any source of light, a bulb, overhead light and try to align the tab to that..( since the shaft is round the light picks up right in the middle, one of those things that is harder to explain than to show) and work backwards.  For me, when I use bramptons, it seems the bottom sets up first, the butt seems to stay loose longer.   Of course the best way would be to have a set up that includes a laser,  I dont have that luxury .  Also pick grips based on your skills...Star grips are great because there are little graphics, harder to see any flaws.   Maybe a local shop has an air gun and can easily make adjustments to the grips

Some folks don't take pride in their work. I for one do and line every one up by eyeballing them. I like logo up for the most part depending on what the log looks like.

That's because if you went to a shop and the "Pro" said they would do it, they were lying; somebody else did it.

  • 2 weeks later...

I eyeball it when replacing my grips.  So that is not 100% accurate.  BUT, i do not use the marks on the grip to line-up my club.  I line-up the club with the leading edge of the clubhead, and then I grip the club without looking at the grip marks.

Same for me.  I also will "square" the club up with a board on my floor to help eyeball the grips to as close as possible.
