Hi,

I would love some help with a scorecard issue in a recent tournament.

Individual Stroke Play 18 hole competition. One player keeping scores for the 4 players in his group. The winner signs the card as a 66 and the card is submitted to the tournament organizers. The tournament organizers do not check the scores and he wins the tournament and is given the first prize.

AFTER the tournament the scores are entered into a computer, hole by hole and it is found that he actually scored 69. He still has the winning score but is he disqualified?

We have found a couple of rulings on this but not sure which applies :

33-5. Score Card
In stroke play, the Committee is responsible for the addition of scores and the application of the handicap recorded on the score card.
33-7. Disqualification Penalty; Committee Discretion
A penalty of disqualification may in exceptional individual cases be waived, modified or imposed if the Committee considers such action warranted.
Any penalty less than disqualification must not be waived or modified. If a Committee considers that a player is guilty of a serious breach of etiquette, it may impose a penalty of disqualification under this Rule.
34-1. Claims and Penalties
b. Stroke Play
In stroke play, a penalty must not be rescinded, modified or imposed after the competition has closed. A competition is closed when the result has been officially announced.
Does anyone know what rule should apply here? Or is there another rule that we should consider?
The competitor has been disqualified but we are not sure if this is the correct action.
thks, andy

I'm fairly certain that he should not have been DQed. I'm pretty sure that you are only responsible for the scores on each hole being correct, not the total, as evidenced by Rule 33-5 that you listed.

If the tournament is officially over, wouldn't that be the end of it though? I mean I'm not sure, it's just what I picked up on from the whole Camillo/Harrington talk.

Harrington and Camilo were disqualified during the tournament (1st and 2nd rounds). the tournament had not been closed. i.e results announced.

what would have happened if the result had been announced and harrington had won the tournament. Then the next day they noticed his hand move the ball on tv. would he then be disqualified?

in our instance the results had been announced and the prizes awarded. then the next day the committee noticed that the scorecard had not been added correctly.

Not only shouldn't he be DQ'd but there is no penalty. A player is only responsible for the score of each hole. It is the committees responsibilty to add the scores.

No.

Were any of the scores he wrote down on the individual holes lower than the score he took?

If no, he still wins. If yes, he still wins because the tournament was over, but the point is moot because again the committee is responsible for the total. You can write down 118 or 58 in the "total" box - it's irrelevant (though maybe kinda douchey). You're responsible only for the individual scores on each hole.

I believe all the scores on the holes were entered correctly. It was not added correctly at the end. It seems everyone is certain that he should NOT be disqualified? That will make my buddy happy. :-)

I told him he had not shot 66 especially when he double bogeyed the first hole. I am getting him a calculator for his birthday.

Thanks for all the replies.

IS this a regulation course? Im always amazed when people dont know exactly wht they shoot. If he's that good, there is a HUGE difference between 66 and 69. Id think its impossible to think you shot a 66 instead of a 69.

It is a par 64 but still a big difference between a 66 and a 69.

So what? One may be skilled in golf not being good in cyphering. I believe that is the reason why a player s not obliged to do do it.

Another question,

A guy plays his ball from the wrong position after hitting in a water hazard. He drops the wrong side of the water but nothing is said after the competition and the scorecards are added up and the result announced and trophies awarded.

afterwards, we find out what happened. do we disqualify him or does this rule apply :

34-1. Claims and Penalties
b. Stroke Play
In stroke play, a penalty must not be rescinded, modified or imposed after the competition has closed. A competition is closed when the result has been officially announced.

Results stand as announced unless the player knew he was in breach of R26. In such a case he should be DQ'd.

no he did not know he was in breach of rule 26. he thought he was taking the correct drop.

so no DQ?

Precisely. This is one of the few occasions where a player may benefit for not knowing the Rules. Not a reason not to learn the Rules, however....

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
    • Day 2, 12/31/25.  Similar to yesterday (rainy, no surprise), I hit primarily 6-iron full swings with the same focus;  I also hit some chips (about 1/8 swing) with the 54.  About two dozen full swings and an equal number of short shots.  All of this was indoors, off a mat, into a net, real balls.
