I'm currently playing the 690cbs and love them but I've gotten the itch for a new set of irons and am definitely going Titleist. I've narrowed the choices down to the 755s or the 735cms. Any advice on the choice and the main differences between the irons? I know the 735s are a blended set. Other than that, are these irons pretty similar? Thanks for any input.

kfloyd, I posed a related question to a very knowledgable and highly respected contributor to this forum: Gas_Can.

He indicated "In the case of the 735's, the sweet spot of the club moves fairly considerably from the heel biased pitching wedge to the almost toe biased three iron. The bounce numbers are different, with a high bounce three iron, and a low bounce short irons. So if you are a sweeper or a digger, at one end of the specturm you may encounter problems in soft or hard conditions". Gas_Can's assessment of the 755s was very favourable. He pointed out that "...they have a thin topline, minimal offset, and a mid sized sole, but also a full cavity for forgiveness and a high ball flight which is especially great in the long irons. Also, since they are stainless steel, they will last considerably longer than the carbon steel forgings..." I hope he doesn't mind me passing this information along and I would highly recommend that you drop him a note if you need more information. Good luck, Tommy

Tommy,

No problem passing on my information, it saved me quite a bit of time, as I was just about to chime in on this thread. However, I mis-worded one of my statements, and should clarify it, and hopefully provide a bit more information as to why I said what I said. When I stated that the sweet spot moves "considerably" that was bad wording. Considerably is a very relative term, and it indicates quite a bit, which isn't true. However, the movement of the sweetspot throughout the 735's is noticeable. Titleist recognized this and tried to alleviate the problem with the hosel plugs; however, that didn't solve the problem entirely. Strike the 9 iron a little on the toe and you will notice some drastic distance loss. Strike the 755's on the toe and you will not notice nearly as much. I am not a big fan of any combo sets on the market. They're a great idea on paper, but making a set that truly flows well is an almost impossible task since you're approaching a full fledged cavity in the long irons and a difficult to hit blade in the short irons. I think of all the manufacturers I think Bridgestone comes the closest, with the J33 combos. That is mostly due to their phenomenal sole grind which suits both diggers and sweepers equally well. Furthermore, no matter how good of a ball striker you are, you might be surprised at the number of times you need a little forgiveness in the short irons. It's one of those things players often don't realize until it's gone. For the players I fit, I highly recommend either buying a set of blades, or cavity backs depending on which one they are comfortable with. There are plenty of cavity backs on the market with the thin topline, small blade size, and clean visuals of a true blade these days such as the Adams Pro Forged, Bridgestone J33 cavity, and Titleist 695CB's so there's not need to sacrifice some forgiveness for visuals. Also, trajectory control can be moderated with minor loft tweaking more effectively than moving club head center of gravity.
