I'm a 20 hdcp. I play 135 yds with my pw, 165 with a 7i. When i'm playing against the wind my shots tend to balloon more than the rest of the players and seem to be much more affected in yardage form a head wind than down wind. Mostly when others hit one club in a head wind i'd be  hitting two more with the short irons/wedges. Does head wind affect more yards a pw than an 8i? Does the +10 yds/10 mph wind apply to all shots or are wedges more likely to +15 yds/mph? How the heck do you know how many mph the wind is blowing? PD: i get a more than decent back spin with my shots for my hdcp. Sorry if I seem to be too modest :) Please help me calculate the wind!!!

You can pull up weather.com on your cell phone and look at what the wind is for that day. Little ahead of time research can help..

But on the course, its feel for me. Usually the first few holes i will feel out the wind and adjust for later in the round.

tips for the wind,

Learn a low shot, which will actually help you in all shots because alot of people flip at the ball, which sounds like your doing. I had issues with a flip and the wind just destroys my ball. Now that i have my hands more infront of the ball, the ball doesn't get nearly effected by the wind. Example, earlier this year, 15-20 mph, and upper 40's out, i only lost like 15 yards on my drives. Last year that would be near 30. But of course my low shot now is really low compared to last year, which was my normal shot height now.

See the attached link for the Beaufort scale to estimate wind speed.

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/faq/tornado/beaufort.html

As for the affect on wind per club, the higher lofted clubs will be affected more because of their trajectory.  What worked for me last year (went from a 20 to a 14 HC) was working on low trajectory punch shots.  Instead of a PW, punch and 8 iron with a 3/4 swing and ball a bit more back in the stance.  For longer shots, punching a 5 or 6 iron would get me a 150 yard low shot with a lot of roll.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the scale!!! it will be very helpfull for me!! I'll try the 3/4 swing, i'm not too confident with these "feel"shots but i'm going to practice them more on the driving range.

@ saevel25 :

Thanks for the advice, but the flipping problem have been taken care of thanks to my "tour striker training aid club":). The problem is i'm playing a course with two 115 yds over water where a low shot won't have room for error. Just calculate the wind right.

Thanks for the reply

club up and swing easy.  "Swing with ease into the Breeze"  Go to the driving range and practice in the wind, the more you play in the wind the better you will get at it.  Played yesterday in a horrendous wind, 150 yard into the wind 5 iron, with the wind 50 deg wedge

    • It's not. 🤣 It's over 90 seconds into a 5-minute video before they say anything about physics, and when they do, they talk about mastering the double pendulum with a definition that includes gravity or something. Here, @GreenhornGolfer and others: https://amzn.to/3IHnf0N. Buy that.
    • Barring a disaster, this will be Scheffler's fourth major and only missing the US Open for a career slam.
    • Have slowly been working on hooding my long irons less. Using a much more neutral grip and a feel of swinging above the waist. This was the 2nd swing today. A clean clip with a 4-iron with what seems like an okay centered pivot and decent balanced finish.
    • Nobody is getting close and Scottie is not letting them. BDC could've had a shot without that awful Thursday. He shot 16 under on the last three days.
