I belong to a small 9 hole club near my home and they would like me to setup a handicap program for the club. They now operate on such a program but would like to make a change to another system...(Not sure why). Can someone advise where I might go to locate such a program?  USGA or otherwise?

USGA is the gold-standard for handicapping, but they'll charge you for the 'privilege'.  I use a website called http://www.greenskeeper.org/main.cfm that allows you to post scores and track a handicap at no charge.  For years, they used the actual USGA formulas but I suppose they got into trademark issues because you can no longer use actual course ratings and slope factors.  But they do have a conversion to their 'X' course factor, so it's still basically the same data as what you'd get through the USGA (though probably wouldn't be accepted at USGA-sanctioned tourneys).

I'm sure there are other sites - maybe google it and see what kind of hits you get?

There's also independent software available.  One of the leagues I'm in utilizes a software program because we choose to use our 5 best from our last ten rounds - it makes a 20-week season much more fluid and dynamic and usually is a better indicator of how a player is playing right now, versus what their best scores were from halfway back through last season.

Question - does your club already have USGA course and slope ratings?  If so, that'd probably be your easiest way to get set up.

Thanks for the quick reply...I have tried to get some ideas via Google but many sites appear to be for individual handicaps and not for setting one up for a club...This club does have a slope rating etc. now.

I guess I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish.  If the course already has a course hdcp, how was it done?  Did the USGA do it, some other agency, or was it just done by someone's best guess?

For starters, you can probably find a wealth of information here - http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Handicap-System-Manual/Handicap-Manual/

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.
    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
