for some weird reason, if i take the same grip when i'm hitting short shots that i use when taking a full swing, i end up pulling the ball. essentially, if i'm hitting a pitch/chip i have to open up the face in order to start it along my target line.

anybody have similar issues? ideas on why this is happening?

any advice is welcome

Hey - try putting the ball more back in your stance (the ball position on higher lofted clubs should be in the middle to back of your stance). This will likely stop you from pulling the ball. I have more details about ball position in my free guide (reference signature).

I was having that issue as well.  I noticed that when placing my hands lower on the club, the club face would close a bit at address.  I was placing my hands the same way, and squaring the face, but the face would close when I hands closed down.   It doesn't happen when I grip in the normal position, heel of my hand 1/2" from the top of the grip.  My chips would go left.  I was constantly shifting the face right before starting my chip.  It was making me a bit crazy.

The last couple of trips to the practice green, I have focused on a neutral or slightly weak grip for chipping when I grip down the shaft.  This squares my club face.  Not sure why it happens other than the grip is smaller diameter lower on the shaft and it may roll in the hands as my hands close down.

I hate to admit it because I'm kind of an advocate of keeping the same grip for everything, but yeah, I've found that I have more confidence chipping with a very strong baseball grip. I'm talking mostly very short stuff though. For pitches, I keep my grip the same as full swing (interlocking). Weird, I know, but I'm very consistent with it.

For chipping I grip down on the club and use a stronger grip.  I find that helps me to square the face up when I play the ball back in my stance for chipping.  I would think that hitting pulls would be more of a swingplane issue than a closed clubface issue.  Try just using a putting stroke with very little, if any wrist hinge.

For pitching, I use the same grip as normal because a pitch to me is basically a 1/3 swing.

Have yo yoed between week, neutral, strong grips the past few years and never got consistency across short pitch shots through to full swing with driver. Weak grip gave me reliable contact and nice ball flight with 50 yard to 100 yds pitch shots but just couldn't make it work on full swing. Strong grip gives me great distance and contact on full swing but more than the occasional chunk shot on short pitch shots costing me double bogey or worse whenever it happened. Then it dawned on me, why not just use weak grip for pitch shots, less shaft lean and more of a brushing the turf swing, and then on full swing use as strong a grip as possible for more distance and better contact. Results have been mind blowing. Such pity it's close season as track man numbers are right where I want them to be. Any one else with dual grip thing going on?

    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
    • Exactly correct.   I was absolutely certain about the penalty (none here), but the bit about where they play from can be really confusing the first time you read it.  In my big paper rule book, i used colored highlighters to make it clear.  Good thing I did, at the Cascades there's little to no cell service, so using the rules app on the phone wasnn't possible.
    • Taking a crack it, but looks pretty clear. 11.1  Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence. a. No Penalty to Any Player If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence: There is no penalty to any player. This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment. Reading further down it looks like they have to play the ball as it lies. No replay from the previous spot.
    • I had an interesting one yesterday, a local qualifier for the US Senior Open, at the Cascades Course at the Homestead.  Well, first things first, the VSGA arrnged for the officials to play the Cascades on Monday at the players' practice round rate.  Its lots of fun, rather old-style (built in the 1920s).  anyway, a player missed a short putt, and (apparently embarrassed) took a step to be ready to tap the ball back in.  The ball lipped out, and hit the player's foot.  I was nearby, and they waved me over, and asked "What do we do now?"  I was pretty sure of the ruling, but asked them to wait for a few seconds while i double-checked.  I did have it correct, even though its one of the more confusing rules in the book right now.  I'll leave the correct answer out for now, in case anyone wants to guess, or research it, and post their ruling.
