Golfing in the U.S.A

So we have booked out first trip to the USA starting in Vegas at new years. We will then be driving towards San Diego and then up the coast eventually finishing in LA.

Its not the top priority, but can anyone recommend some golf courses? We don't want to pay a tonne, but we will need club hire.

Also, any other must do's while we are there? How much are we looking at paying for an average nights stay after Vegas?

The Grand Canyon is worth the drive from Las Vegas, but will be  pretty cold in January. I'd still go see it. Another must-see for me was Muir Woods and Yosemite, which is in the wrong direction from San Diego. Again, it's January and giant Redwoods in the snow might not be much fun. I guess I would bypass Los Angeles, drive the 300 miles  and spend a few days in the Bay area instead.

Never golfed in the desert. I'm sure the greens will be watered and green, and there must not be a lot of trees, you won't notice it's winter?

Sound like fun. Las Vegas on NY Years is surely a great time.  Hope you get used to driving on the correct side of the highway.

The most amazing federal park in the USA is probably Yellowstone, but it is a long way from Las Vegas.  Not sure how it would be in January, however.  Weather could be an issue. Yellowstone is mostly in the northwest corner of Wyoming.  If I were traveling to the western USA for the first time, seeing Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons would be at the top of my list -- just not sure about wintertime weather conditions.

Vegas weather in January is perfect golfing weather. My friend that lives there let's me know this when I'm freezing and dreaming of playing on the east coast. The grand canyon is 100% something you should see. More than any of the casinos or whatever. I enjoyed our trip to the canyon and just milling around in the desert much more than any casino.

Wolf Creek is a short drive from Vegas. I'd steer clear of the casino ran courses as they are insanely expensive. There are reasonably priced courses around the city. A quick google search turned up a number of courses.

Staying off the strip will save you cash. We stayed at the Hilton and it was probably half of any casinos on the strip. They have a course there to which guests receive a discount on (I believe). Also, get a monorail pass while you're there. Cabs are extremely pricey and the monorail goes everywhere.

We are staying in PH for vegas, then we get a rental car after 5 days and then we can do whatever.

I have no idea what to expect with hotel/motel prices up the coast and in the cities. Any insight?
